Having also owned the X800, I'd like to add (once more) that its SDR conversion is much worse than Panasonic's (704) and that I really didn't like controlling the X800 via its remote.
Quickly switching on/off (English) subtitles via remote was a pain for example, because you could only do a full circle through the subtitles and audio tracks - there was no "back". Which is a real pain when you have lots of subtitles and clicked once too often - which (of course) always happened to me at least one more time after the first time. ![]() ![]() To be fair, I have to add that I upgraded the original remote of the 704 to the remote of the 900 for little money, which was a major improvement. So control wise much better than the X800, but still worse than what I was used to from my Oppo players. The Pana is currently my "cheap UHD in SDR/1080p workaround". I do agree that the Sony was distinctly quicker and more responsive. Won't comment on the pq. |

I was also surprised by how good the little Sony remote was in regard to its buttons (pressure point), but I, for one, was missing lots of functionality that I really need in every day use. Quickly turning on and off (English) subtitles was one of them. This was a pain with the original 704 remote as well though and one of the reasons I bought the 900 remote (the "LIGHT" button being another one).
Sooner or later I'll buy an Oppo again. I'm spoiled. ![]() EDIT: Another neat feature of the Panasonic is the subtitle shift (which can often also be used to "turn off" forced subs). My Oppos can do this as well, I think the Sony could not (?) - not sure about that though. Loved the region free mod of the Sony though - that was the real pity when I had to send it back. I dig the subtitle shift feature but it's not something I use 99.99% of the time, for me it only comes in handy when shifting forced subtitles off the screen and at last count I've got the grand total of one disc which I need to do that for.

Can this player bitstream Atmos & DTS:X audio from MKV files played over the network or via USB?
Is it also possible to change the size of subtitles? |

I haven't loaded it yet but the site just says "network capability" or something like that I think? But other folks have posted on AVF that the HLG to PQ transcoding feature of the later generation players has also been added.

Hello, friends! I was hoping some of you could suggest the best settings for this player, as there are so many different settings, i'm not sure how to proceed. I'm pairing the Panny UB900 with my Vizio P75-C1(which has HDR), and I want to maximize the player's potential with the correct settings. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance! |

One of the biggest things you need to do is set the edge correction at 1 to get rid of the minor ringing. If you want you can also adjust some of the other sharpness adjustments a little bit but the edge correction is the big one.

Depending on your TV it might also be a good idea to set the player to output 10 bit instead of 12 bit.
Other picture adjustments (except the mentioned edge correction) I would leave at 0 and use the TVs settings to make changes if neccessary. |

I just tried the LG Cymatic Jazz HLG trailer on the Panny with the firmware before last and it plays the clip fine and the TV is triggered into the correct HLG decoding mode, so it's okay with playing HLG even before this latest update. But I'm updating the firmware anyway now to see if the HLG to PQ conversion has indeed been added.

On a side note, how long should the latest update take? The display's been stuck on E DISC for ten minutes already.
okay, make that 25 minutes...looks like the install has hanged. Shit. What do I do now? Last edited by Geoff D; 09-18-2017 at 05:30 PM. |
