I notice you’ve changed your avatar, but still apparently living the good life.

Your guys’ 4K HDR wish in relation to a sporting event reminds me that after listening to the webinar linked to in DanBa’s post awhile back, I never got the opportunity here to comment. Will do so now, once I find the Q&A discussion after the 1st presentation, so as to be clear to those who haven’t already watched it.

^ Of note at ~ 28min 25 sec. timestamp of the webinar, this exchange -

Audience question from Peter Sykes (Sony Europe): “Do you have a specific example of where HLG performs subjectively better than PQ?

Answer from the Presenter, Dagmar Driesnack (IRT): “I have to check the results….on which sequences there were the performance of the HLG was statistically better than the PQ but I don’t have it in my head now.”

For those inquiring analytical minds into HDR and scientific testing (30 participants each seated in turns 1.5 PH away from the display with a background luminance of 10 cd/m²) who wondered about exactly which sequences (content), allow me to fill in the answer for Dagmar as despite the data not being included in her excellent slide presentation, I am familiar with the lab testing and summary data:

Global results (all scenes combined overall) showed that HLG provided equivalent or slightly better Mean Opinion Scores than PQ10.

From a statistical point of view, a Student t-test carried out on each bitrate level and for each scene showed that HLG was at least equivalent or better than PQ10, except for Fireworks at 5 Mbit/s, as seen below:

However, keep in mind, and this is an important qualifier - the studies results came from tests which were designed with the intention to simulate a short term live broadcast use case i.e. relying on a 1000 cd/m2 workflow. For non-live content, more expanded workflows and displays with higher peak luminance capabilities, the performance of the HDR technologies may well be different.

Yeah, can you imagine Augusta National in all it's 4k glory? As close as I'll ever get to Amen Corner.

And who’s to say that a person’s retina couldn’t also undergo change, like for instance being stretched? Ergo, scientific testing with an OCT device is needed (one astronaut scans thee other).

Although I favor the Sony CLEDIS, if all goes well according to the Samsung plan, there should be a commercial Samsung Cinema LED screen up and running in Los Angeles next month.

If you thought that HDR would be easy sailing across all oceans think again.

Yeah but we have Dolby Vision, even streams. DOVI? Forget it, this is Sparta, this is HDR.

Perhaps for some ‘pro’ reviewers, there is a reason behind some of their goofy reviews -

From the ‘pro’ twitter feed -
https://twitter.com/UltraHDForum/sta...19359944998914

Actually, the precise sequence being shown on the TV to the two viewers at that pictured moment is not from a sporting event per se, but rather from a short movie shot at 100 fps, some productions stills of which I posted last year –

For something new , here’s a fresh pic from the production which I hadn’t posted before –

Anyway, a reason I make note of this sequence being from a movie, is because this short movie’s claim to fame (and rightly so) is that it was the first narrative film produced in HDR, WCG, HFR, and UHD.

No matter what they say I've done, I ain't never had too much fun.

Those marsupials are sneaky little critters. One minute they're laughing with you, the next you're half in their pouch.
