this is getting to be ridiculous, way worse than blu-ray days, they were not already skipping new releases on blu-ray for DVD or VHS only. It's just not a good sign when it's already that the new format is getting shafted for half the new releases. EVen major stuff like Beverly Hills cop doesn't even get UHD despite new 4k master and streaming getting it. Give the 4k to the people hwo don't give and job the physical media, great. How is UHD not already half dead when just a few years in even new theatrical releases, very major ones with big box office and awards no less can't even get on the new format? (on a side note why did Mr. Roger's get UHD but not LW when the former wasn't half as visually spectacular? if they simply had to do one or the other on UHD, what sense in this? less awards, less box office I think, less visual of a movie....)
I was disappointed that Beverly Hills Cop didn’t get a 4K release. Also sad that so many great A24 films like The Lighthouse and Midsommar didn’t get 4K releases here.

The indie labels work with what they have, if they want to get into the UHD game then it's going to be smaller titles like Rad and Tammy and Maniac and Zombie or whatever (though as Bill Lustig admitted, he owns the last two outright and so he can afford to wait for the UHDs to pay for themselves over time) as well as whatever 'name' titles they can license from the majors, like Arrow with Flash and Pitch Black and Shout with Beer Hunter.

As for Mr Rogers getting a 4K while Little Women didn't, maybe they figure that the old dudes who still buy discs might be partial to a bit of nostalgia like that, while it still comes down to them thinking that some drama about a bunch of women is not going to sell to that same demographic, awards buzz or not. Call Me By Your Name also had a ton of awards heat but did Sony release it on UHD? Nope. The Favourite also had a ton of awards heat but did Fox release it on UHD? Nope. It's not always about heat, it's about what the suits think that us UHD-buying fruitcakes are actually after.

You keep mentioning "the Blu-ray days" but we're not in the olden days any more. Physical media is dying and UHD costs substantially more to master, author and replicate than Blu-ray. Sure, the studios wouldn't release anything on the format if they didn't think it was worth their while (look at Disnee's recent avalanche of catalogue stuff) so they're still making money on UHD, but they're being ever more selective with what they release and that's been the case from the start. Deep catalogue stuff is rare without a major anniversary or holiday-related theme or remake/reboot/sequel tie-in to cash in on, and new stuff is pretty much all the crash-boom-bang modern toss with a few smaller flicks thrown in to make up the numbers.

And that's why UHD isn't dead, because all that modern fluff - 2K upscales and all - is what's keeping the format going, and that's where the meat and potatoes have always been with physical media. Long term re-releases of catalogue stuff is just gravy but is something that the studios have been easing up on for years, licensing out thousands of titles to indies so they can get paid for not lifting a finger and let the indie take all the risk. But now that more indies have entered the game then we might see an increase in licensed 4K titles, at long last.

At this point, they should just release a 4K Tom Cruise collection, with A Few Good Men, Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Far and Away, Minority Report, Magnolia, Jerry McGuire, etc.

Magnolia is not a "Tom Cruise film". Jack Nicholson fans would probably object to calling
"A Few Good Men" one as well. A collection should just be "films Tom was in".

Poor you. Here in France the movie theatres opened again last week with strict spacing and hygiene measures in place. Great to be able to go to the big screen again.

Hey guys, I follow Sylvester Stallone on Instagram. Someone asked him if Rocky 4 will be released in 4K and he said "yes". Take that for what it's worth. If Rocky 4 will have a 4K release, then I'm assuming all of the Rocky movies will.

You didn't actually specify 4K disc anyway.

Framing the production for a cinematic experience in widescreen 2.40:1, Galvin selected a trio of Sony Venice cameras, shooting at 4K

Galvin attended the 4K HDR DI for Unhinged remotely from his home in Dublin, with grading performed by colourist Ian Vertovec at LightIron in Los Angeles. This involved harnessing Moxion, an advanced dailies platform, to transfer reels that Galvin could review on an iPad Pro.

Why bother going to a theater when you've got a nice 4K TV and player,a 4K disc of the film you want to see, a pause button, the bathroom nearby and your fridge nearby as well?

No TV Screen is as big as any of the screens at the theatres I go to, nor the sound system as good. And the sharing with an audience is something special, other people laughing, gasping, sighing around and with me. You also get to see new movies well before you can buy the discs or even steal pirated downloads and help destroy the business.
