I get excited when I turn on a sports event (like the World Cup going on right now) and see that YouTube TV has it in 4k. I pay for the 4k package through YouTubeTV. It is 100% NOT worth it due to how few 4k broadcasts there are. But I pay for it just to get a few random broadcasts in 4k. That seems to be a good example of 4k and it's implementation.

4K for live sports isn't quite the leap yet from regular HD. It will get better though in time. I would love to see a higher framer rate for live sports as I think that could be a game changer.

I do agree that we need high framerate sports content. |

That adds to my point, which I should have clarified. I was trying to say how 4k is still not widely utilized. There is limited 4k availability in terms of sports, and as you point out it's not even that great. However, in my opinion, you definitely notice a difference I think what we both are saying is that 4k still has a ways to go yet.

As for 8K.... well, I have a hard time believing that the vast majority of people can actually benefit much from it. Remember, each time we "upgrade" , the upgrade becomes less of a jump. IMO, good 4K discs and content look fantastic. They sound great too. I really cant imagine re-buying my disc collection yet again and/or buying a whole bunch of new gear that supports 8K. I just acquired a 77" Sony OLED and 4K looks majestic on it. How much "more" do I need? Despite being into physical media and high quality video, the phrase "diminishing returns" comes to mind here. Id rather they concentrate on getting out every movie possible on 4K with a good transfer & audio. Lets get that right first before we whip out the next thing. |

I live in the Philippines myself and I can confirm at least half of this. Here is a North Korean TV broadcast from last November: And also for the Philippines, the CGI is more than 30 years behind. The CGI in the local shows looks worse than in-game graphics from the SEGA Genesis. The CGI makes DOOM 1993 look like Pixar by comparison. Also, as for 8K. Many older games look amazing in 8K. Almost all games from before 2014 can be played in 8K 60fps with max settings and they look great. And many games can still run and look good in 8K 60fps. NVIDIA even promoted how DLSS can produce great results with 8K displays for Death Stranding using Ultra Performance (1440p reconstructed to 8K using DLSS 2.0). And that was just the RTX 3090. Maybe the RTX 4090 can play Death Stranding in 8K 60fps HDR with Performance Mode (4K reconstructed to 8K). Last edited by Hydra Spectre; 01-08-2023 at 11:17 AM. |

The image is definitely better when it is a 4k broadcast. I go back and forth between games for example and can definitely see the difference. If it is just an upscale, then I wish they would just upscale everything.

4k's much more mainstream than I'd have imagined. It helps that nearly every TV is also native 4k. Most people likely aren't picky over a/v quality when hd streaming is getting so close to physical media, more specifically in regards to pq. But it is nice to see so many movies released in 4k. Remasters/new scans to blu are also welcome.

4K UHD-BD is an evolved product. It's roots are first in DVD then in BD. Those that buy them no longer buy BDs pretty much. So 4K UHD-BD cannibalized BD sales to gain it's market share. |

Cannibalism on top of cannibalism since Blu-ray buyers also stopped buying DVDs unless nothing better was available for a particular title, or unless the Blu-ray was mastered/authored poorly compared to earlier versions or missing extras from past versions.

I watched some 4K football this weekend. It does look better than regular HD, but the difference isn't as big as you would think. Seems they haven't quite figured out the HDR/HLG aspect of it yet as it's a little too dim.

Streaming has also been cannibalizing all the other sectors of media. I know a lot of people who have stopped going to see movies in theaters as it will be available to stream anyway in a month or 2. The prices I am willing to pay has also dropped considerably because of streaming.
