Default Dark Water - US BD - 20 PNG Captures

The American remake of Dark Water is often referred to as a bad horror movie. That's probably because it's not a horror movie at all - it's a psychological drama with thriller elements. And a damn good one, at that. There are a few "boo!" scares scattered throughout - probably studio-mandated - but they aren't the focus. Viewer disappointment is understandable since the studio marketed it as the next coming of The Ring. Even that almost makes sense - the Japanese version was definitely a horror film, directed by Hideo Nakata (the director of Ringu), and the original short story was by Koji Suzuki, the author of the original Ring novel.

Still, the marketing department was misguided, and misled the public. This film is all about the characters and the atmosphere. There are some great performances here, especially by Jennifer Connelly giving an absolute powerhouse turn as central character Dahlia. The visuals are moody and elegant even as they're grimy and uninviting.

The Blu-ray was an early release from Buena Vista. The transfer is a 1080p MPEG-2 offering at an average bitrate of 17.1 Mbps. It's good but not great; occasional banding and edge enhancement accompany the slightest touch of compression artifacting from time to time. Overall it's satisfying.

Your shots are clearly from a poorly compressed source, lacking fine detail and definition. Blocking artifacts are present in every shot (most easily seen in the last screenshot, the sky looks terrible).

I found shots that look 10x times better. If those below represent the final product, I'll be happy.

Default Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers

Here's a rarity: A movie that was screwed up so badly it erased three films from existence. Halloween 6 was written by uber-fan Daniel Farrands in an attempt to explain some of the weirder elements of the previous film (a psychic link, a mysterious man in black, a cryptic runic symbol, and a cliffhanger ending). Star Donald Pleasance called this script the best since the original.

Unfortunately, producer Paul Freeman began throwing away and rewriting parts of the script during the shoot, making things even weirder and sillier. This led to the infamous "Producer's Cut", never officially released. After flopping at test screenings, more rewrites and reshoots were done, leading to 40 minutes - including the entire third act - being replaced. The result is a jumbled, confused, laughable mess with a ludicrous, disjointed, and totally unnecessary plot. The following films in the series ignored not only this entry, but parts 4 and 5 as well.

Not all is bad news - there's some nice visual flair, for instance. A few moments sprinkled throughout are clever and likeable homages to the original. There's some actual suspense in a few places. And Marianne Hagan makes a pretty decent female lead - far better than the annoying Wendy Kaplan from the previous film. Still, the negatives far outweigh the positives and the movie mostly deserves its poor reputation.

Echo Bridge's budget release is presented in 1080i at 21.0 Mbps average, in 1.78:1 - probably a slight crop from the original 1.85:1. Sometimes it looks quite good and filmic, but occasionally the image suffers from moderate to heavy artifacting. There is plenty of grain and some print damage, but no more than to be expected from an unrestored, poorly-received, low-budget film from 15 years ago.

20 uncompressed PNG captures - I've avoided ones from the spoileriffic (and awful) third act:
