Default Scrubs

Any word on Scrubs being release on Blu-ray? It's a Buena Vista release.

What would the point be? There's only ever been one episode of Scrubs in HD. All the masters are Digi Beta, standard-def 480i.

Actually, the distirbutor is Buena Vista Television. This would be sweet on BD but like Verbal said, they've not shot many in HD. Oh, well.

You can't be serious. The last season was shot in 2007. There's absolutely no way it was shot in 480, when consumers are shooting there home videos on Mini HD Camcorders.

The show is shot on 16mm film. Low-res, low-quality film. Then it's mastered to standard-definition video, using Sony's Digital Betacam cassettes for storage.

This is the same reason why you'll never see The Shield on BD.

The didn't like the look of the HD video so they went back to film.

Seriously doubt that. EVERYTHING is scanned at HD, regardless of film of origin these days. While it certainly was that way in the beginning I'm sure, considering the advances in desktop based tools, I'm positive they've moved to an HD capable system by now. That article was from 2003

One of the big obstacles still remaining to the on-site system though is outputting the final show back to Digi Beta. It's a problem that could be solved by switching to shooting Scrubs in high definition and outputting the final show back via SDI. And while the notion of a tape coming out of the HD camera, going down the hall, getting digitized, edited and then transferred back to HD may sound like a production dream come true, Scrubs is taking a conservative wait-and-see stance on switching to HD origination.
I'd say they've waited and seed by now

It is a VERY low budget show, and has never been shot in HD in the true sense. In fact, if you watch NBC's entire Thursday night line up on a typcial night when Scrubs is on, you'll notice that it's the only non-HD/non-widescreen show that is on.

While a Blu-Ray release would help with it being less compressed and probably make the quality somewhat better compared to DVD, it wouldn't be enough of a difference to make most people rebuy it. I personally already have all of the season sets that have come out so far on DVD, and I really couldn't see rebuying the show on Blu-Ray, esspecially not for what the sets would likely cost. If they came out at $15 to $20 per season, I might consider rebuying them, but there's no way a whole season of a show would come out on Blu-Ray at that price.... at least not anytime soon.

It's possible....but with only one show ever produced in HD, how likely is it? I can't imagine NBC wouldn't want to show another primetime show in high-def, so where's the evidence that Touchstone Television has pulled the trigger on Scrubs?

I for one am waiting to see what the true deal is. If I know they will never ever release them on BD, I will buy them on standard DVD.

While there's no evidence EITHER WAY, the fact is the show is still shot on film. If the original elements are stored properly, the studio can do a frame-by-frame match using the re-scanned elements. Unlike some sitcoms in the 70s-90s which were shot direct to SD tape, Scrubs and other shows shot on film can be in HD.

Look at Cheers and Charlie's Angels.

Well I for one just got Blazing Saddles on blu-ray and this movie was released 34 years ago (1974) and it looks GREAT! Like it could have been shot a few years ago.

If they can make a movie this old look this good then there has to be a way to make scrubs on blu-ray a viable option.

I'm afraid it's a totally different situation. Blazing Saddles is a movie shot on 35mm film (way more effective resolution than BD) with a physical film archive master available to scan at high resolution.

Scrubs is a TV show, apparently shot on 16mm film and mastered to tape in standard definition. I don't know much about TV productions, but I wouldn't be surprised if a low-budget show like Scrubs did not keep original film elements around after the SD tape master is struck.

The only way Scrubs will benefit from a hi-def presentation on Blu-ray is if the original 16mm film elements are available from which to create a hi-def digital master. Assuming the film is available, I still seriously doubt the content owners will put up the money to do that anytime soon.

I'd assume the film is available since Scrubs has found it's way onto Comedy Central, TV Land, WGN, The CW and probably a few other channels I can't think off right now.

Just because it's in syndication doesn't mean the source film is availabe, it just means the SD masters are available (unless it airs in HD on those channels, tha is).

There's no rule saying that 16mm can't transfer to HD, just that it won't look as sharp as larger stock sizes. They may need to recut the film if they were truly mastered to tape at 480i, but I'm sure the film is stored somewhere and they have the adequate documentation to allow for recutting directly from the film source.

Not to mention that it is now showing on ABC in 16:9 HD, and even if previous seasons aren't ripe for a BD release, this one will be.

ps I recall reading somewhere that they said that the sides of the matte were protected so that the film could be opened up to 16:9 in the future. I believe a specific example of this is the opening to the show: in this season, they're using the same old opening, but it's opened up to 16:9 now.

So hypothetically if one were to stumble across the first few seasons for cheap on DVD it'd be a good buy instead of waiting for BD?

The opening appeared to be cropped to fit 16x9 by what I've seen. But I could be wrong.
