Well, since they moved to abc for their eigth seson, they have started shooting in HD 16:9. They were forced to by the exec's at abc, so this season (their final one) will probably come out on BD. I hope.

Nope. Easy way to tell, look at the title screen where it shows the name of the show. In the 4:3 version, you see basically only the slide with the logo. In the 16:9 version, you can see a little on the left and right of the slide.

If you don't believe me, head over to ABC.com and watch one of the new episodes, then hop on over to youtube and check out the 4:3 opening theme there.

These reviews show that a 16mm show/movie makes for great Blus. I'm almost sure that the film from Scrubs is still around, making HD Scrubs a possibility. I know I'm for an Blu Scrubs. I wonder if his daydreams would be crazier in HD.

If the Blu's look anything like the ABC HD broadcasts, count me out. ABC has the worst HD. Does anybody else think so. It's so soft and I don't know if it's the technical term, but really fuzzy.

It's also only 720p...at least here, it is.

Anyway, lots of shots from the first eppy in 16x9 tonight. Want to do some comparisons and see if they were cropped or if there were some masters that we're not privy to. Maybe we'll see this on blu one day?

Would love to see these on Blu-ray. Gonna miss this show and really enjoyed the finale tonight. Hate that Dr. Kelso left before the end.

The scene with Carla and J.D. walking with a patient on the gurney was not cropped you can see the lamp is not plugged in.

I think maybe the scene with Elliot and J.D. in the closet was.

All 8 seasons of scrubs have been shot on super 16 film (16mm film with a 16:9 aspect ratio) which has a greater resolution than 1080p HD (about 2000 lines horizontally).

The film negatives would definitely be kept as they are much much more durable than any cassete/tape based master. Mastering them to SD digibeta or similar would be throwiing away the superior contrast and colour that only film can pick up.

The DP planned for the future when shooting on film so I think there is a good chance that all 8 seasons will be released on Blu-ray. All of which would look better than the HD broadcast of season 8.

Hope this helps!

Who's to say it still might not happen someday?

It's only the creator of the show saying that...

I remember reading the article from the series cinematographer about how they framed the entire run of the series for 16:9 widescreen and HD but that it was simply never aired that way because at the time people only had 4:3 TV's. Why can't they get this released that way? It's happening for other shows from the time-period, including the release of Gilmore Girls on Netflix.

I know Scrubs is already on Netflix but this seems like something that could still happen someday. Maybe.

Q: "Hi Bill, I have two questions for you:

1.) Is it possible, technically speaking, for all Scrubs seasons to be restored and released on HD 16:9, like it was done with a few scenes from season 1 used on the series finale?

2.) Would you like it to be released in 16:9, or do you think the show looks better in 4:3?

The only way Scrubs will benefit from a hi-def presentation on Blu-ray is if the original 16mm film elements are available from which to create a hi-def digital master. Assuming the film is available, I still seriously doubt the content owners will put up the money to do that anytime soon.
There is no way that they lose the original 16mm negative after they transfer it to tape, & 16mm can look really good, & if they shot it in super 16mm, then they could scan it in 16:9. In the UK around that time, all 16mm TV dramas were shot in super 16, even though they were for 4x3 post & transmission. But there is a cost involved in HD scanning, putting it all together & colour grading from scratch, & as you say, the owners probably won't bother...& after looking at some of the Buffy caps here, probably just as well!
