It seems like a totally pointless award, unless they're planning on making a load of 2K UHD BDs with higher than BD specs?

I'm probably not looking at it from the Alliance's viewpoint, perhaps they're using the Premium label to tell people the discs are in 4K and not just 1080p and they aren't concerned that movies will feature upsampled effects (as most of the theatrical 4K presentations do anyway). But to me at least slapping the Premium label on the first wave seems slightly disconcerting!

It's bad enough they've changed the UHD BD label to UHD BD 4K. Considering they're two separate resolutions and different aspect ratios.

I think it's the aspect ratio it was shot in that's getting it by. 2.35.0 instead of 1.85.0, if it was shot in 1.85.0 it would utilise all 3840 x 2160 pixels on the TV screen, if it was shot in 2K then that would be a problem as there clearly would be more pixels on you're TV screen then the digital file it was shot at. as it was shot at 2.35.0 black bars will utilise some of the 3840 x 2160 pixels that the TV has, essentially you're getting better black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. does that make sense?

1.78 would use the full frame, 1.85 still has bars

Right well either way do all concerned get my point. with HD 2.35 films do not utilise the entire amount of pixels available but get away with calling themselves HD, like wise for Ultra HD films. My point is there must be a written compromise somewhere that even governments agree with.

As there is no price available yet for this player, by taking a pre-order you understand that you are NOT purchasing the goods for free. You may cancel your order at any time.:
1 x I understand

* "Samsung UBD-K8500" is not available in the requested quantity. 1 of the items will be backordered

I was hoping for a pre order price guarantee

I would prefer the Panasonic to be honest so I will pass on pre ordering, also it will be for Christmas 2016 at the earliest now.

Buy projector. Not t.v is an idiot screen.

Best AV Deals..... you can't get better than free can you lol. shame I would order one but the player is bent to begin with and 8 and 5 add up to 13 which is a very unlucky number so with those two reasons in mind I will hold for now.

That's the plan here. Ideally I want one that gets rid of the bars.

You have to go to customer service and have an associate go to the back because they are not on the floor yet. But they have plenty in stock and they can sell them.

I guess it wasn't clear in the Audioholics article I posted earlier.

"Content Master
• The UHD Alliance Content Master must meet the following requirements:

• Image Resolution: 3840x2160
• Color Bit Depth: Minimum 10-bit signal
• Color: BT.2020 color representation
• High Dynamic Range: SMPTE ST2084 EOTF"

If any one of these elements is missing, the UHD Alliance Premium logo may not be used on content. (This is the rainbow hourglass shaped logo)
So, a UHD BR without HDR will not be premium certified.

The UHD Alliance recommends the following mastering display specifications:

• Display Reproduction: Minimum 100% of P3 colors
• Peak Brightness: More than 1000 nits
• Black Level: Less than 0.03 nits

I just unpacked my player. The packaging is pretty nice for a Samsung unit. It's also heavier than I was expecting. The unit is about 15" in length and it barely fit on one of my av shelves. Another nice surprise is this is 802.11ac capable which will make for faster updates. The remote also has some weight to it and is about the same size as the Amazon Fire TV remote. Browsing through menu options is still a tad sluggish, although not nearly as bad as 1st gen BD players. I'd still like it to be a little smoother, but that's being a little nitpicky.

The Amazon Fire remote is totally fine being the size it is since it only has 7 buttons and a d-pad. This Samsung remote is too small for its 20 buttons and d-pad.

Ok, I just sampled about 10 minutes of UHD Kingsmen. A few observations:

1) no internet required to play the disc (I disconnected the ethernet before loading).

2) disc loaded in 20 seconds

3) UHD movie looked significantly sharper than the included BD playing on my Oppo (I don't have HDR on my Sony65X900A). Don't know if it's because I'm looking at higher native resolution or not, but it easily looks better. Colors look the same (at least, as far as I could tell).

4) No extras on the UHD. They are on the BD.

5) Going to disc menu during the movie takes you out of the movie, but it will resume after you go back to the movie

6) Resume feature does work after turning off the player.

I'll check it out more later, but so far the PQ looks very good!

I like that, it keeps more space for the UHD movie.
