10-bit is what the actual HDR10 source is being mastered at, which contains up to 1 billion shades of colour. A 12-bit source has up to 68 billion shades of colour so when you're upsampling 10-bit video to 12 you're asking the processor to interpolate those extra 67 billion shades from the 1 billion that's actually there. If the processor can do it seamlessly without inducing any unwanted banding/posterisation of colour gradients then that's fine but it's still not strictly necessary, given the maximum 10-bit panels that reside in most mid to high end TVs these days. (Dolby Vision is of course 12-bit but this player doesn't do DV so it doesn't apply. Also, Sony's internal processing in their TVs runs at 14-bit anyway thanks to their prevailing interest in oversampling e.g. SBM, so you don't need to add any special sauce before sticking the turkey in the oven.)
But what's interesting is that even with the new "10-bit priority" mode on the Panny UB900 the Sony X800 player is better at rendering out banding torture tests. That fade to black on Leo's face at the start of the Relevant is a banding horror show but the Sony handles it with as much grace as possible whereas the Panny - even on the 10-bit output - is noticeably more stressed. Stacey Spears created an excellent 10-bit HDR banding test pattern and it's smooth as butter on the Sony (with Deep Colour on or off) when piped into my ZD9 but the Panny, again, looks more posterised in either 10 or 12-bit output. As much as I love mah Panny I think it's had it's chips. |

Thats interesting, maybe just because the Panny chip has a little more age on it. I know when it comes to netflix and amazon, I much prefer the X800 to the 900. |

Yes, take with the relevant boulder-sized chunk of salt. It'd be sweet if it happened mind you, as although Panasonic have publicly stated that they have no need for DV in their displays there's nothing stopping them from providing it as a playback option in their players.

Hi recently purchased the Panasonic DMP-UB900 have it matched to a LG UH63T-70 and paired to a Denon 2300 amp.
The DVD player runs through the amp and then to the tv, the issue I have is with 2 movies so far (Sully and Oblivion) part way through the movie the picture split screens and is out of sync. With Sully - I paused , rewound and it was ok - not so with Oblivion. Any thoughts |

Still having the same issues with my XD9405 TV when using this player, either at 10 or 12 bit output. Will swap cables sometime next week and see what happens. Not too keen on doing that because I have to mess up the whole cable management system.
![]() If that won't work I'll switch players and hook up the X800 to the XD9405 and the Panny to the ZD9, see what happens then... |

Update: I disabled the Viera link option and all seems to be working fine now. Fingers crossed though as I have only watched one movie since... ![]() Hopefully it stays that way, not being able to use my TV remote for the Panny player is a smalll thing compared to the hell I was having with the TV's unresponsiveness and quirks before... I'm also glad I did not took the whole cable management system apart. ![]() |

Never used the Samsung myself, but from what I've read and heard from the guys at the store, the Panny smokes the Samsung. You get what you pay for, really. ![]() |

A few questions regarding Panasonic 4K Blu-ray players for those who know as I don't own one. I noticed on their website they have the DMP-UB900 for $599.99, same as what Best Buy charges. It appears to be the only 4K Blu-ray player that Panasonic makes.
I then saw that sometime in September or October they will be releasing the DMP-UB200 for $249.99. Of the two, is it worth waiting for the new one? There is a big price difference just curious if the UB900 is 1st gen and the UB200 would be considered 2nd gen, hence the big price drop or is there a big difference between the two? I have a standard Panasonic Blu-ray player with an extended warranty that I got from Best Buy, its been having some issues and they had told me when I purchased they don't service them anymore, they swap them out. Since they only carry one Blu-ray Panasonic player (the 4K UB900) technically they would swamp mine out for that I assume. Just was curious if I should wait until the UB200 comes out if it will be a better player than the UB900. Thanks in advance.... |

Panasonic has released other 4K Blu-ray players such as the UB400 but these player currently are not available in the US. Because of competition I believe Panasonic is limiting 4K player availability to only high end models. I believe Best Buy will give you a credit towards a comparably priced Blu-ray player.
From the Best Buy web site: "It clearly states a gift card to not exceed the original purchase amount may be provided at our sole discretion in lieu of a replacement item." Last edited by PaulGo; 08-11-2017 at 03:06 AM. |
