Warner Bros The Searchers (1956) now coming from Warner Archive in Dec

The Searchers Blu-ray 2024

The Searchers 4K Blu-ray 2024

The Searchers Blu-ray 2006

Warner Home Video has done the film proud with what is perhaps the best classic catalog release yet on Blu-ray. Like it's HD DVD counterpart, a truly magnificent transfer and a soundtrack that remains faithful to the original source material are capped off by a fabulous package of supplements. If you are at all a fan of 'The Searchers,' this one is an absolute must-own
Now I have never seen this John Wayne movie but after reading the entire review makes me want to run out and get it.

Kind of funny how that's been happening more often, isn't it?

Hell, it really must be amazing if even that bunch can't bash it, even though it has a BD label on it.

Hope this disc helps put an end to anti High Definition naysayers that keep telling me that High Definition is all very fine for new movies but that for old classics it's worthless cus they can't look much better than on their DVDs...

In a sense, one of my most awaited BD releases, and I have it! My Precious! VistaVision in full 1080 glory!

(Unless you saw a special (very rare) VistaVision screening or a 70mm Blow Up, all you ever seen from the VistaVision negative movies is optical 35mm reduction prints. Or videos. (White Christmas, The Ten Commandments, North By Northwest, Toc Catch A Thief, War And Peace (US version), Funny Face, etc.)

It appears the Blu-ray version got a 1/2 start rating better for PQ than its HD DVD counterpart too on this one. So much for the FUD that Blu-ray could only equal the PQ in HD DVD...hehehehe. This got a full 5 star rating for PQ.

That is odd since this is almost certainly the same encode...?

Perhaps he is using a Panasonic player for reviews now...

His BD front end may now be better quality than his HD-DVD front end? (Didn't he have a Samsung and he posted the news of the Samsung firmware upgrade so his must be fully functioning), or he after watching 1080p for a while hasretrained his eyes to notice subtle diferences in picture quality and he is watching.. like a Hawk

I'll just Me too this one, John Ford is the man. Be glad to get a classic movie in my collection to balance out all this terrible pop culture trash I've been buying.

Default The Searchers rocks

OK so I popped this in my Sony last night and was blown away by the images.

John Ford knows how to shoot his movies and this is the best showcase his work could receive; to be remastered in HD.

Some of the wide shots just blow you away. Anyone doubting that old movies can look good on BD should see this. Awesome.

I agree. This certainly makes the case for Vistavision movies on Blu-ray. "North by Northwest", and "Strategic Air Command" are on my wish list.

I confess, I wasn't too hot on getting a 1956 vintage film on BD; after all, how good could the quality really be??? But because of this thread, I went ahead, and took the gamble

HOLY CRAP!

From the opening scene, when the camera comes out of the homestead and you see the buttes in the background, it is almost like you can reach out and touch them! Incredulous, I popped in my SD DVD, and I must say, not many other comparisons showcase the potential of BD, even with making OLD movies look new!

North by Northwest - Hell Ya!

Warner clearly has the processes to extract the quality from their old catalog. This is HUGELY important.

I was wondering about this title. But, I'll be popping out to get it after the Seattle/Chicago game (one of the advantages of living a one minute walk away from a BB ).

One other thing I just noticed, they mastered the DVD and the BD much differently, even to the amount of the image from the original film... a great place to notice this is about 5:55 into the movie.... if you look at the BD, then look at the SD, there is about 10% of the image just missing.... split evenly between top and botom and left and right.... wow.... Its just.... GONE.

Good for you Gary, let us know what you think!

Count me in!

Even though I'm not a big fan of THE SEARCHERS, I wanted a "demo" disc to show off how nice a classic 50-year old title could look in high definition, and this disc definitely blows one away!

Now, why can't all current releases look this good?
