this is more a marketing thing than anything else. weren't there some movies being done in 4K before this big push(collectors set, etc)? they are trying to make it a big deal when really, it is just the next step. how many movies were released on DVD9 with a ton of space left over? they could have been doing this all along instead of usually putting out the master they used for the dvd but why go all out when you can make it a big deal down the road and make more money off of it? in the end, the 4k is only important if the movie is handled properly. just being 4k is somewhat meaningless.

You devil you. Quite perceptive in recognizing the determining factor of ‘handling the movie properly’ despite the resolution of the scan or D.I. workflow.

Being that the devil is in the details, further detailed insight would be most appreciated, if not as an Open Letter to all content providers regarding the proper protocol, but as a teaching vehicle to readers here as I think all of us (I know I certainly can) always learn something meaningful which we weren’t aware of, despite all the 4K hoopla.

So, specifically how would you recommend ‘em handling the movie ‘properly’, let’s say starting with 2K or 4K 10bit log dpx files. You can skip whether this product is of value or not…http://www.filmlight.ltd.uk/pdf/data...LProjector.pdf because it promotes a certain manufacturer.

^ Well, I think the 65" and 55" 4K Sony models run about $1200. more than their compatible 1080p brethren (anyone feel free to check me on that as I'm not 100% sure on the exact price differential) so, in essence you're paying a $1200. premium for a TV that can project native 4K and unlike the Seiki, can also do an excellent job at upscaling HD content.

However, I think all forms of competition end up being a good thing for the consumer.

Well unfortunately the PQ isn’t nearly of the same magnitude as the ESPN video, but at least you’ll get an idea of the Groove (turn up the volume)….

Cool, looking forward to Asia cup in Hong Kong also. Sunderland are competing this year! Chance to see new players (all 50 of them!)

Nice write up by imagic of AVS-

What got my attention-

Quote:
"Seeing is believing." Wilkinson opened the panel with a discussion of the benefits of Ultra HD beyond the pixel count. The short answer: It's all about picture quality, which more than just raw pixel count. The quality of each pixel is also a factor in determining total image quality, namely the video bit depth and frame rate. When a reference to UHD as being like "looking through a window" came up, Wilkinson mentioned that companies made the same claim for 1080p HD video, and he asked if UHD was like cleaning the window with a squeegee. Overall, the manufacturers seemed confident that consumers would react positively to the increase in picture quality that UHD provides, that it would drive future sales of ever-larger screens.
Quote:
Joe Kane is a man who spends considerable time and effort pushing the industry forward, and his comments highlighted a major theme of the day—that UHD is about much more than raw pixel count. He seized the moment to espouse the need for higher bitrates, bit depths, and frame rates, a larger color gamut, high dynamic-range capabilities, and standards to make sure it all works. His message: If there is an opportunity to establish new standards and move forward, then everything should be on the table—especially a move to abandon legacy fractional frame rates and adopt high bit depths. Kane even discussed the potential for 16-bit high dynamic range (HDR) video in Ultra HD. That is something I would personally love to see.
Lets do this correctly please.

Little did I realize that I was actually in the presence of two remarkable people at the time. Pele , of course, and the photojournalist who captured the event for Newsweek and later went on to become a famous White House Photographer http://www.cah.utexas.edu/photojourn...ckname=mcnamee

And unfortunately, given how important vision is especially to a photographer, developed age related macular degeneration about 10 years ago. Macular degeneration (at least the dry form)…. http://www.nbcnews.com/health/tiny-t...oss-6C10474402

Anyway, when I get more time, I’ll search to see if a pic of Pele and me is still online so I can provide a direct link. You might like it. It was quite a big deal back in the day (Pele coming to the U.S. on a tour with Santos), at least in the soccer community and I was quite inspired at the time because I knew I was in the presence of a legend but also rather nervous because it was far from a daily occurrence for me to walk onto the pitch of a packed (50-60,000?) D.C. stadium and have his name announced over the loud speakers.

Much of what you’re quoting was already covered on this forum way back in March… https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...pe#post7325076 , and even prior to that.

Plus, something I see not mentioned in your quotes is how critical compression is to 4K images at home. Someone should have asked the panel if they’ve viewed uncompressed 4K vs. compressed 4K (at different HEVC bitrates) and what was their screen-to-eye distances and subsequent impressions.

The only autograph I’ve ever gotten….well, excluding those which we sent me as gifts over the years.

Anyway, then I’ll do a search but, it will have to wait until after this Holiday weekend as I may have to call up the photographer in order to hunt down the online link (I don’t want to have to take any of the pics out of the large custom frame which is hanging in our family room and then scan one of them). Unless some creepy person has some kind of sophisticated facial aging software I think my identity will remain safely hidden ….as I was very young….and had two good knees….and no scars from open surgeries.

Also, for the record, if that opposing player (of a known reputation) had insulted someone in my family like that, well, I would have head-butted him too, like Zidane …or worse.
