In the Famitsu interview, Suda kicked things off by praising Ueda's statements at the GDC panel about "temporary immersion" -- the way he aims to have his games attract players for a limited period of time and affect them more greatly in their mind when they're not playing. "I want games to be more of a plus in the real world," Ueda responded. I certainly understand that games that require an enormous amount of time to play are a requirement from a business or product standpoint, but I think I'm meant to fulfill a different role in this industry." Ueda went on to point out that the concept of what you consume driving how you feel "is the essence of all entertainment, not just games. It's just that games are addictive and take up your time. It's easy to make someone play your game for longer, but I don't know if that's the best thing. I think games could stand to be a little shorter."
Quote: For his part, Ueda noted that in the storytelling process, it's important that the user "can imagine the ending, or what's waiting at the end, the instant he starts the game... In a movie, you know you've got about two hours, and you can tell the story in any kind of surprising manner you want. Games are something you have to actively proceed though, though, so I think complex storytelling is difficult. There was an era where simple curiosity for what comes next was enough to keep gamers excited, but I don't think that's the case today -- I think they're more likely to keep playing if they can see how things are going to progress."
To back this statement up, Ueda brought up the example of massively multiplayer online games. "When MMO games first started to be come out, there was a time when simply seeing all these characters that aren't NPCs milling about was enough to amaze you," he said. "But there's nothing amazing about that anymore. I think that's a trap that open-world design can fall into, too. You have this great big world with all kinds of scripts and interactions, but that isn't going to be enough to keep things interesting." Suda added that open-world "might be the current trend, but the fact that it's a trend indicates right there that it's getting old."
