The Lightbox in Toronto will be screening this next month. Super excited since this will be my first time to see Rita Hayworth on the big screen. Nothing of a 4k restoration is mentioned in the listing, so I've emailed them to get some information on what print they are using. |

You have a point..but why not mass release it if they did it for 'Ishtar'? Seems the bottom line is what matters most to them and, also, makes this classic less visible to the general public.

Two things about Sony and the bottom line...
The bottom line is a legitimate concern. If selling through TT or TCM (or Sony or Mill Creek or Image or whomever) makes them more money then it's not unreasonable of them to go that route. They're not a charity. They don't exactly skimp when it comes to taking care of their libraries. Whatever they might do with them afterwards, there's really no question that they put a lot of time, expertise and money into restoring and mastering their properties. Say whatever else you want about Sony, they appear to be very responsible custodians of the films they own. This is starting to look like an interesting year as far as they're concerned. Grindhouse Releasing is coming out with The Swimmer and now there's this release through TCM. Neither one is cheap but neither one is limited to XXX copies either. They also seem to be a little more inclined to do direct releases (which are pretty affordable). It's going to be interesting to see how this all shakes out. I'm also wondering where the hell Gilda is going to end up now. It seemed like a natural for Criterion but to be honest it's an even better fit for TCM. I was sure that Rififi was going to be the best new Blu-ray of January 2014. I guess that I was wrong. I'm all over this. EDIT: I just pre-ordered. $29.94 is steep, but I've been excited to see this movie forever. Last edited by The Great Owl; 01-09-2014 at 01:05 PM. |

Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer a wide release, and this film deserves one. But given the choice between TT, and TCM, I'd choose the latter everytime.
