So in theory, are these the "best" quality releases and do they play in a typical US blu-ray player?

Yes and Yes. Most places aren't going to spend the money on a 4K transfer to botch it.

just watched "convoy" BD, and it looks superb. It's also 4K transfer ? If not, I would be surprised, because it looks better, than most 4K remasters from my BD collection
To my knowledge Convoy has not received a 4K treatment.
For your info a proper 2K process can deliver very good results.

Anyone know if Donnie Brasco (Sony Extended Cut) is from a 4K master? It looks stunning.

That is unlikely, it was released years ago.

Judging from Dr Zhivago, Wizard of Oz, and a few other 35mm films here, can you get 8K out of 35mm or are there some things I need to know about?

True.

Looking at comparisons, the Blu-ray looks to have come from the same master used for the DVD. Which will probably be 2K.

It's long over due for THE SAND PEBBLES and the original PLANET OF THE APES to get 4K scans and digital restorations.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Arrow's superb presentation of King Of New York is from a 4K master.

I was just thinking that myself. And Big Trouble In Little China, but I cannot find any evidence regarding either.

Arrow's release of BTILC, the master is from Fox, same one they used for their Blu-ray, but I am sure I read somewhere that it was a newly created master, but I don't think there was mention of it being 4K.

The Spy Who Loved Me

It looks to me like its come from a 4K master. Although it wasn't done by Lowry. MGM did it themselves, which is why there is no Lowry credit at the end.

I think its one of the best looking Bond's out of the lot, up there with CR, QoS and Skyfall. Its certainly very filmic.

I don't know if you would class this as evidence, but I may as well post it.

Not sure about BTILC, though I do agree that it looks great. My instincts say it's a 2K scan rather than 4K.

Do you know if the upcoming Arrow release of Thief will be 4K?

Yeah, a well done 2K scan will look good, so it can be hard to judge.

I don't know, but, hopefully it will be the same 4K master that the Criterion release used.

There is no chance that Arrow's Big Trouble In Little China is from a 4K transfer. It would have to be the worst 4K transfer ever made.

Seconding especially for Planet of the Apes (1968), but for an MPEG2 transfer, The Sand Pebbles looks brilliant. But yes I wouldn't mind FOX doing full-blown 4K remasters for both titles.
Also a new 4K BD50 for BLADE RUNNER: The Final Cut using AVC with a brand new encode, DTS-HD MA 5.1 with all commentarties. The original Blu-ray was released during the format war and had to make compromise with the limitations with HD DVD for a dual format release. Much greater bitrate and film structure. Weren't the 65mm, special effects, elements scanned it 6K or 8K and the rest of the film, 35mm elements, scanned in either 4K or 6K?
Lawrence of Arabia looks beautiful but I wish it were on a BD100 due to the length of the film and with a bitrate averaging in the 60's. I'd be more than happy to buy it again since Sony loves this movie as much as I do.
Dances with Wolves could certainly use a 4K remaster since the current Extended Cut released appears as though it's from an older transfer, mainly because the bitrate is pitifully low.

Blade Runner: The final Cut would be fantastic with a high bitrate AVC encode. If you are referring to the films audio track, It doesn't need a DTS-HD MA track, as lossless is lossless and will produce the same audio as the TrueHD track.

If you are not aware, there is a 'Mastered in 4K' release of Lawrence of Arabia, released in Japan:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Lawre...Blu-ray/88211/

The film is split over the two discs, and thus no extras.

I wouldn't mind if the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track had a far greater bitrate too in comparison to the Dolby TrueHD, but icing would be a PCM track instead. Also an AVC encode BD50 exclusive would be the complete Vangeles score as a DTS-HD MA track too.

I'll be importing the Mastered in 4K release next week of Lawrence of Arabia from Amazon JP since it's on sale there until September 30th. Getting it for $27.13 which isn't bad but I still wish it were on a BD100 with insane bitrate. Of course I'll still be keeping the release I already have in my collection and won't be rebuying it again until 4K physical discs. Same for the release I own of The French Connection.
There're limits, of course.
