Was the old framing 100% correct?

Dunno, but I generally abhor loss of picture information.

it is way more slight than things like rain man, and you are hardly losing any real info.
All new masters should have slight framing changes.
I still have the UK DVD with MPEG audio somehwere

You're losing image on all four sides, most notably the top of the frame. It's something that could've been avoided.

If that info was meant to be seen, and if anything important is lost.
It looks fine

Wouldn't surprise me if the new Jerry Maguire Mi4K version was first scaled down from 4K to 2K - so 1998x1080 for a 1.85 feature - and then cropped at the sides to 1920x1080 to ensure the very best quality. Lay the 1.85 borders over the top of the newly-cropped image and that might account for the slight loss of real estate on all four sides of the new one. The new one looks stunning in those caps though; with 1080p looking that good, how much better can 4K actually get?

Right, this makes sense and what we frequently see some cropping on new transfers otherwise you're looking at resolution loss due to the mathematics of scaling to 1080p with no cropping.

So, if we get actual 4K discs, there won't be any more cropping?

Unfortunately not, because the exact same things will apply with 4K as with 2K; the 4096x1716/3998x2160 images will have to be either scaled or cropped horizontally to fit the 3840x2160 consumer UHD resolution.

How come the previous BD release retained more picture information, then?

Cropping is never ideal and I expect in this day and age that it can be avoided, but the remaster is a huge improvement in every other way (expect for the blacks in one shot).

Being one of Sony's earlier high-def transfers it was probably done at HD res to begin with, i.e. it didn't need to be cropped or scaled down to fit the HD frame. All of that said, it could just simply be a case of a reframed new transfer. It wouldn't the first and it certainly won't be the last.

Looking at those caps makes me wonder what Fifth Element would look like if Sony got a third crack at it...

Fox is doing film scans at 4K, they simply don't tout it as much as some other studios.
