Lay the 1.85 borders over the top of the newly-cropped image and that might account for the slight loss of real estate on all four sides of the new one. The new one looks stunning in those caps though; with 1080p looking that good, how much better can 4K actually get?
Depends on compression

It was more of a rhetorical question but yes, there are plenty of factors more than simple pixel resolution which could make the difference with 4K in the home. Colour sampling, bit depth, WCG and even the compression will all play a part. IIRC Penton said in one of the 4K tech threads that HEVC reproduces grain even finer than what AVC can do.

To go back to my rhetorical question, I've got the Aliens BD on in the background for the umpteenth time and it looks so utterly incredible (not just for Aliens, but Blu-ray in general) that if 4K BD *is* a substantial improvement then I may end up spontaneously combusting with joy.

It's very nice, bar my issues with colour and with grain

IMO the colour's fine as the movie was lit with a shit-ton of practical lights including a lot of fluorescents so the greeny tinge is perfectly appropriate (if not what a full unfiltered fluorescent would look like), and the grain looks wonderfully naturalistic to me. I hate to go all nagysaudio on people but it really is one of the very best Blu-rays out there.

Not going to get into it, it's not historically accurate is all I will say.

Would I be happy if the Star Trek movies or the Italian job looked that way? Yes but it's not what was shot.

Well, I've shared similar sentiments in the TGTBATU thread and got told by a couple of folks that I'm a plonker (in the politest way possible) for daring to question such things from the comfort of my armchair, so I appreciate where you're coming from. But this is a movie where I'd actually expect to see this style of colour timing, and the colour is much more nuanced than people give it credit for, the movie isn't just plastered with the teal grade.

I respect your opinion and would not name call, but it looked blue, pink and green in 35mm and the look digitally is not correct.
But is very pleasing

There's a region free German bluray of Society (1989) with a 4K transfer.

Its very possible that Commando become a new scan for the directors Cut Blu-ray. I can not imagine tha Fox use the old transfer and cut only the unrated footage in it.

Fox did 2010 a new 4K scan for the UHE of Predator. Sadly they ruined the scan with DNR and contrast boost. So I hope of an re-remastered edition.

It loooks like Universals Breakfast Club, Apollo 13 and Spartacus becoming new transfers:

I hope they brings new Blu-rays with this transferss. Further I hope they make a new 2D Blu-ray for Jurassic Park with the new 4K transfer and sound mix, they did for the 3D disc.

I'm in a debate with someone about the transfer for the 35th anniversary of Halloween. Can someone please let me know if it's a 4K transfer or not? It's not listed on here and I didn't think that it was, but it was said in the beginning that the transfer would come from a 4K scan but it was never confirmed that it would be used for the blu-ray transfer. Anyone with knowledge about it chime in please, thanks.

I hope you are right about Apollo 13, but I don't see where it states it and Spartacus are new transfers.

@HeavyHitter, in the text stands world premiere restoration, so it must be an all new transfer.

I doubt that the UHE came from a 4K scan.

No engineer would butcher a 4K master like that. When you perform a 4K scan, the cost of doing so is high, the whole point is to preserve grain structure and detail.

Applying DNR to the level of which they did, pretty much rendered a 4K scan useless, unless they are going to release it properly on Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray, in the future.

Grain would have been finer than the original disc anyway

Exactly.

A lot of what you see in the 2008 release is noise and artifacting, but I still believe it to be more filmic than the UHE.

From looking at current Blu-ray's from 4K scans, I would love to see what Predator and even Commando look like, given 4K scans and untouched transfers.

Both are grainy films and would benefit greatly.
