How many OLED owners here actually do it? Probably just a handful of people since nobody dares mention it in reviews year after year. Retailers go into hiding at the topic & Tech YouTubers have no clue. Maybe scared of Warranty claims I guess since any SR is logged into the Menu with its serial #

So, would you all then recommend getting a SR and turning it off?? My LG C9 has been awesome but I did see the issue with the display dimming at darker scenes, particularly with Disney +’s Hawkeye. Curious if it’s worth it to turn it off so that doesn’t happen again.

I would recommend getting one.

If you don’t game, I’d say go for it. Just note to self when you enter the menu with it, your C9 will log it into its Remotes/Accessories History. I haven’t found anyway to get it out of my C1’s menu. So “Pair Status” remains RED.

Even if you don’t decide however to turn on/off TPC, you can at least see how many Mini Pixel Refreshers you have run under UTT followed by Major Pixel Refreshers which you can’t see outside of the SR menu.

PQ is night & day difference in Dolby Vision.

The C1’s DV version is 27.17 which may update via future firmware. They rolled out 2 updates in the last week. Still no change to the DV #

HDR has its own separate Controller.

I think it's zero, but it can depend on the picture mode.

Well, unfortunately I do game on my LG C9 from time to time so this may not be the best choice for me at the moment. However, this is a problem if it’s dimming while watching movies, particularly in Dolby Vision.

LG must have really made the AI too sensitive. Watching movies shouldn’t be an issue. Now I get if there is a static display on the screen, but the majority of the time movies are going through scenes and aren’t staying static in one area. Has anyone actually asked LG why this is?? If not, maybe it’s time it gets brought up and they issue a firmware update to correct the AI issue. I get that it needs to dim from time to time but not in the way they are doing it, especially when watching movies!!

Too sensitive? I’d say it’s not sensitive enough, i.e. when there’s a prolonged scene with lower brightness it doesn’t seem to be able to detect if there’s any movement there, it thinks it’s showing a fixed unmoving frame so it starts gradually dimming it down. Can’t believe that this is still a thing after so many generations of these sets but, as said above, it’s like this unspoken secret amongst the cognoscenti. That it can be turned off is irrelevant, as the vast majority of people won’t want to tinker with their TVs in the service menu and so how many LG OLED owners are watching scenes dim down to almost nothing and saying **** all about it, thinking that it’s normal that they can’t see anything? Bonkers.

I see what you mean. I didn’t realize it’s the other way around where the more sensitive, the better the AI detects that it’s not a still image and it doesn’t need to dim down the screen. But yes, it’s ridiculous that after all of these generations that the AI has not been improved to fix this issue!! LG should fix this!

Definitely turn off TPC, I was able to get into the service menu with my Harmony remote.

The scenes I tested which trigger ASBL do in fact have static backgrounds. While you are focused on the actors it’s actually the background with only 2-3 camera angles for over 90 seconds which triggers the AI & it will deem them to be... static.

I have gone back & forth with TPC simply because it’s a win/lose scenario. No dimming on movies/shows.. Awesome. No dimming on static games (especially HDR) not so awesome.

This is one thing I Don't miss about LG when I switched over to my new TV. I too used a remote to access the Service menu on the LG to disable it. Luckily the Sony, which also has a similar although way less aggressive functions, hasn't kicked in once.

Just to double down on this.

APL is indeed higher with TPC off. Doesn’t matter what is on screen. I use 45 for SDR which is supposed to be 100 nits. TPC off seems like the image is brighter. For SDR games 60 is around 125-130 nits. TPC off again with these values seems like the SDR game is brighter.

GRS is for Logos so I leave that alone.

A service remote shouldn’t be required.

As I said PQ is night & day different with TPC off. I have the new EVO BS panel on my C1. Brightness is capped by the firmware which I am absolutely fine with.

Only took me just over a month to discover OLEDs weakness. Others have returned theirs thinking their TVs were faulty.

I’d have to watch DTM in Dark scenes before passing judgement though.
I would take a look at it, particularly if you want to compare HDR10 with DTM "On" when watching a Marvel Movie vs. the Dolby Vision version on Disney+. I have found that with DTM Off, the ABL is far less than what of Dolby Vision and with DTM "On," the ABL is either the same or slightly higher than the Dolby Vision version.

I choose to have it "On" so I can be as close as possible to the DV version. It may go overboard at times, but it overall looks much better than with DTM being "Off"

Briefly tried it in The Martian (2015) film.

It does indeed ad more pop to the image. This is one of those subjective things people either like or not. I prefer the source do the tone mapping. Not because it’s bad, but I find it to be too bright for my Pitch black viewing environment.

I've only owned an LG C1 for about a week but I've done A LOT of testing and I can tell you now that the DTM on these tvs is absolute dogs**t. The algorithm gets confused all the time which means the picture you are seeing is even further removed from the artistic intent than just messing about with some "wrong" settings.
It's also completely unusable on stuff shot on film as it misinterprets the film grain. I own both the UK version and the DE version of Dune (1984). Same transfer, same HDR grade but different encodes meaning slightly different grain fields.
Without DTM: Identical brightness throughout.
With DTM: Different brightness between the exact same scenes.

I would recommend turning it off.
