as with Season 1 (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0779817/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cr527) an aesthetic HDR look chosen by the filmmakers, not the studio, nor the color scientists or colorists of the finishing company - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...s#post18250356

different strokes for different folks, e.g. Miami Vice (gritty noise) back in the day of Blu-ray

or “lifted blacks” as in Season 2……both imaging appearances are known as creative intent which is the prerogative of the Director or DP who is representing the former’s artistic wishes.

Yes, heaven forbid the content creators grade the content to look how they want it to look, rather than what stretches the bounds of the technology and/or display device. **** me.

Criticizing the way it looks is no different that criticizing the storyline, the directing or the acting. If the movie is horribly bad due to bad acting or directing, that was the intent and therefore should not be criticized at all. You got exactly what the director and content creators wanted. Thus there should be no reviews of any movies on this forum.

Point being if you are only going to 200 nits call it what it is, SDR! Also don't have SDR content placed inside a HDR container to fool people into thinking it is better than it is. Either utilize the format or don't! I am referring to season 1 of course. It looks like they got their head out of their ass for season 2.

One thing I will admit to, given my 'creative intent' points scoring above: I viewed an SDR 1080p version of the S2 opener and forced HLG on it which looked absolutely stunning, like it was made for it. Even the resolution felt like 4K because of the HDR.

Any hints on how a mere mortal could recreate that at home?
On my Z9D.

yeah Geoff D, with the accepted standard of motion pictures being shot on the superb clarity, color rendition and resolution of 35mm film cameras, the gall of Universal Pictures to market Miami Vice as a major feature film when Michael Mann shot it on HD digital cameras with the resultant effect.

After seeing that, he should have been publicly labeled as a Fake Director.

As it seems Vincent prides himself in being a nitpicker in terms of technical quality, I’m wondering if he feels the imagery he shot vis-ŕ-vis the iPhone 12 Pro Dolby Vision shooting process is oversharpened.

Vincent and other folks seem to forget the difference between objectivity and subjectivity.

You can object that the subject doesn't look how you want, but the creator has fulfilled their intention.

That may have needed a winky emoji so everyone's sarcasm detector was effectively activated.

Geoff and Chip know I’m in agreement with them. But as to new readers, yes, good point, satire is habitually misunderstood. So, I’ll add the respective emoji.

Point being it was shot in HD! If he shot it on SD cameras and then it was put on the Blu-ray format and listed as 1080p that would have been a problem. Releasing SDR content, putting it into an HDR container and then calling it HDR is quite bluntly false advertising and the issue here.

No, I think you don’t get the point. Suggest you re-read that post. Back in the day, since Miami Vice was advertised as a feature film (with a big budget), some misguided souls - e.g. http://www.fulvuedrive-in.com/review...0Film%20Review therefore expected its acquisition and workflow to be the de facto standard of the time - 35mm capture, i.e. comparatively sharp and noiseless as compared to an early HD cam in Rec. 709 with ‘customized’ LUTs.

Anyway, Season 1 is old news now having been discussed amongst independent colorists, etc. on closed professional forums where one has to qualify in order to gain access, as well as on open platforms like here and elsewhere with Charles.
