I'm starting to think by the time HDR is down to a T, and an everyday thing for the masses. The best HDR grades will all be on something digital.

The studio's are already trying to find a way to cut out cinemas. I imagine when not if 1500+ nit 8K displays become the norm for many households, then they are going to really use HDR as a nuclear weapon against the cinemas. Everyday pun intended with nuclear.

Speaking of high nits and eye strain, is there anyone here that's experienced it with HDR? I do once in a while with certain titles on my Z9D. It's mainly the ones that have a high APL though like the Space Adventure Cobra UHD. It's nothing to the point of where I'll get a headache like I often do with 3D, but my eyes definitely feel tired afterwards.

In all honesty: no, I've never experienced this on the ZD9. But then I don't have SAC

I'd imagine there's a mixture, some folks go for new models no matter what the upgrade, it isn't quite the level of upgrading iPhones, but some like the new and shiny.

Personally, I'm in the upgrade when it's an upgrade camp.

Looking forward to finding out more about the new OLEDs, but it's going to be a while until they hit my price range.

Granted I must just have sensitive eyes, but I've noticed my eyes are a little more tired in general watching HDR vs. SDR, to varying degrees depending on the title. Do you ever get eye strain from 3D on your ZD9?

I don't know how many people here and on the AVS forum that does it. However, people do it. Just like people that upgrade phones every year. Mass consumption is a critical issue and apparently that issue has started to hit the A/V world.

I may have mentioned that in the past on the HDR Discussion Thread, as Poppy is a co-chair of that Working Party.

Well Xiidra, perhaps of value for bytor, is a mixture, 0.05% if I recall, but what % of membership are we talking about?

That’s like comparing apples and oranges. If you don’t suffer from dry eyes, then maybe try a bias light with your TV.

I get a headache after watching 3D, yes, which is entirely due to the active shutter flickering however many times a second. But I genuinely don't get any kind of 'tired eyes' after watching HDR, and in a darkened room at that.

There are several people I know of on AVF who literally change their TV every year without fail. I'm not sure what point I'm making re: the wider discussion here, but these kinds of FOMO types (no, not matey with the white gloves) do exist.

Annual cell phone upgrades are insane. The only thing they're basically giving you is an improved camera for taking selfies.

Now with TVs, the annual upgrade appears to be nits. Nits madness!!

You're missing the point. The main was happy with his CX until Vincent told him not to be. Vincent also knows that LG has new sets coming out that he will push.

The representation of HDR in the home is not the finished product yet, and maybe not ever as the green lobby is going to have something to say about 4000-nit or 10,000-nit sets. So, for once, these upgrades are justified especially because the development of luminance had basically stalled with OLED until Pannysonic hit upon the heatsink idea, which has had the bonus of tightening up image retention too. This might be the first time in a LONG time that there'll be some genuine improvements in the OLED ecosystem from the more widely available brands like LG. Blame them for hitting the ceiling and releasing what was a very similar TV with the 9 and X series of OLEDs, don't blame others for actually daring to innovate with this technology.

Who's the green lobby? Anyway, I have no problem with improving OLED and even making it brighter, at least on the 10% window. I currently have the C8 which is currently the brightest OLED LG made. However, I believe, when it comes to OLED, there's a ceiling to how bright they can be. For the consumer that desire a super bright the display, they will have to move on from OLED and/or possibly purchase a LED, Mini-LED or wait for some new tech like micro-led, Q-NED etc. I don't see a 4000 nit OLED display.

I like that forum already….given I see the inclusivity of their ‘Lifestyle’ subforum – https://www.avforums.com/forums/ . Never really followed it except for their occasional Youtubes interviewing industry heavyweights.

Back to the point, so you know of several such avid hobbyists on AVF who chase the latest and greatest for whatever reason, like I did back in the day with motorcycles. That’s out of how many members do they have posting their thoughts over there, 3, 4, 5 thousand? So, again what % of the videophile forum-active population are we ‘saving’, something like .001, across the pond too?

As I said, I dunno what point I was making w/ref to this wider discussion about saving people from themselves. It just cracks me up/fills me with jealous rage that people can and do change their gear so often.

But, to that point, they're not the people who need saving from themselves, no, as all it would take is the technological equivalent of a new hat a la Malibu Stacey to get them to buy yet another new TV. Like 8K resolution, for example...

Most insane to me are the types that own a flagship model from last year or the year before, sell it in anticipation of the coming flagship, and on top of that they get a mid-range TV to use as a temporary replacement in the interim.

When you reach that point it's an addiction. Not that I'm judging.

They can always put the midrange one into the sixth bedroom in the east wing. Can't let the servants have it, mind you.
