There's a youtube channel called HDR-X where the guy takes these 8-bit SDR originals and does what Vincent has done here. His results are very variable: some ok, some look awful. You really do need the uncompressed raw originals to be able to do anything meaningful, because you are stretching out a VERY small number of bits over a very wide area. He pretentiously says he is "mastering in HDR-X", as if he's invented something new.

Vinnie calls creator's intended HDR "Fake HDR" then proceeds to make his own. Plus who's to know how much more dynamic range is at the source? we've seen plenty of nuked UHD content because there's not much more to get from them (which he seems quite happy with).

What does "damned if he didn't" even mean in this context? No-one in their right fookin mind would ask him to regrade SDR stuff into HDR so why are you surprised that we're taking the piss? He's only picked this up from Evil Boris anyway, who was doing his own trailer regrades a while back.
