But will they just ignore the 3D sequence or include it? It was dropped for the German mediabook...

88 Films was the one that did the anaglyph glasses tease on their Facebook a year ago weren't they? I assume this is what they were referring too.

Alexander Melkumov of NIFKI uploaded two very unique vintage stereofilms to youtube over the weekend. I was able to view these in 3D using the youtube app on my 3DTV.

"The Magic Lake" 1979 (Волшебное озеро)
Ivan Petrovich

Very stylish stop-motion puppet animation in which Baba Yaga sends some spooky forest urchins to torment the heroes of this classic Russian fairytale. The animation techniques are highly advanced for the time, and the sets are charmingly handcrafted and beautifully lit. I found the 3-D very effective.

Digitally restored at NIKFI from the original negative in 2012

"When Men Sing" 1980 (Когда поют мужчины)
Heino Pars

A bendy bus filled with a touring male choir crashes into the building of an historic clock tower sending them hurtling back to prehistoric times, where they ride a spiky-backed Diplodocus. The animation here is a little more cartoonish, and somewhat less accomplished, although more than adequate. What makes this film particularly unique is some remarkable time-lapse and reverse time-lapse stereography involving (among other subjects) melting ice structures that are very beautiful and abstract. A must-see.

Digitally restored at NIKFI from a 70mm positive in 2012

Wasn’t Severin teasing a 3D release a while ago? Wonder if it’s still in the works.

Yes, that was foretold years ago in the Legend of the Owensby Box Set, complete with new supplemental interviews shot in North Carolina. I can't imagine Severin doing this without the help of 3DFA, and they are busy for the next couple of years with other projects. So this may be on hold, or it may not exist anymore. Who knows? I'm still looking around for that Dekanalog Blu-ray 3D.

Severin has a booth at Beyond Fest in LA. The attendant said they have no 3D in the works, and if they did it would be something originally made in 3D. Sounds like the Owensby set isn’t on his radar, or it could just be above his pay grade.

I told them they absolutely have to release them in 3-D.But they have them all...help them out 3-D Archive..don’t let them go out flat! Severin rarely disappoints but this is the only chance we’re ever going to get to get 3-D masters of these! There must have been some sweet talking by both Severin and Vinegar Syndrome to come off of these previously unobtainable properties. On another note-Universal,Warner Brothers, and Paramount have been pretty lax lately in letter other distributors remaster their older titles to both Criterion and Scream Factory...It may be time to try to negotiate once again for Murders at the Rue Morgue,The Man Who Wasn’t There and Spacehunter.

Sounded pretty promising back in 2021, but so far, Severin has only released A Day of Judgment.

Well, we know that 3DFA has 3 unannounced Silver Age titles in the pipeline, so Rottweiler and Tales of the Third Dimension could be 2 of them. Speculate away...

@BleedOrange11

In your IMDB list, you mention that the UK release of 'She Freak' (1967) has a 3D bonus segment. I looked at the backcover of the UK Blu-ray but the word 3D is not mentioned. But I have read on a website that the bonus segment is in 3D. Why is it not mentioned on the cover of the Blu-ray, or did I look at the wrong article? If there is only one UK Blu-ray from 101Films, do you know, if the 3D bonus segment is also on the US Blu-ray from VinegarSyndrome, it lists the same bonus features on the back, or is the bonus segment a 3D-exclusive for the UK release?

I just found out about the inclusion of the Asylum of the Insane anaglyph 3D footage on the She Freak Blu-rays this afternoon. Was actually going to post about it here just now. I don't own either release to confirm, but it reads like both releases are identical. Reviews for both say that the anaglyph 3D inserts are presented separately as a bonus feature.

Too bad AGFA couldn't collaborate with 3DFA to convert the anaglyph 3D to separate images and present it frame-packed and within the feature. Maybe it just wasn't worth it (and not part of the original 1967 presentation). I don't know what the 3D footage is like.

I was unaware of those releases.

I came across that anglyph footage on a Something Weird dvd many years back. To be honest, it sounded a lot more interesting than what it is. As I recall, just amateur hour stuff with kids in halloween masks. It was only a film in the loosest sense. No real storyline, just random footage, and some of the most ineffective anaglyph I've ever seen. I might take another look at it tomorrow, see if I misjudged it, and consider whether it's something I might want to upgrade.

From Glenn Erickson's review of Monsters Crash the Pajama Party:
Quote:
Asylum of the Insane is apparently a few minutes of 3D footage, some of which is monsters in masks but other unedited material is simply a kid throwing a football at the camera. The 3D barely worked, I'm sorry to say. The DVD case contains one pair of 3D Glasses.

Yes, Asylum of the Insane appears to be little more than an anaglyph 3D backyard teenagers' Halloween-mask/stab-at-the-camera-with-knives-and-garden-tools home movie. Presumably a cheapo ballyhoo attempt by She Freak's distributors. Pfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft.

Took another look at it last night. It's definitely not something I could recommend to any sane person.

The anaglyh ghosting is so severe that a lot of it doesn't work at all. If 3-DFA ran it through their anaglyph extraction process, some of the gimmick shots could perhaps be improved somewhat, but it's never going to be anything special. Depending on the colours in the new bluray, at best one might get somewhat less ghosting than the old dvd.

These promo images were on the old 3-DFA website:

Gotta love the claim: "Play It Anywhere You Can Hang Up A Bedsheet in A Cow Pasture and Gross A Solid Ton!"
Kinda sums up their low-effort, get-rich-quick mentality.

A rare opportunity to see Frankenstein's Bloody Terror.

As a 1973 film, this year would mark the 50th anniversary of Flesh For Frankenstein.

I was sure I read somewhere that the 3D elements for Hyperspace/Gremloids exist. Does anyone else remember seeing this?

No, according to what Bob was told years ago, Owensby lost the original negatives and couldn't find Chris Condon's 3D print or any other 3D version. Maybe something could be found or cobbled together by someone on the inside, but for now, we assume Hyperspace is lost 3D.

BTW, if I'm correct, it was originally released flat, so there were probably not very many 3D release prints ever made.

Greg Kintz and I had a VERY productive meeting yesterday with Frank Tarzi at Kino Lorber and we discussed two of the upcoming Silver Age restorations.

Neither title has been announced yet but, wow, there are some really exciting films in the restoration pipeline.

Stay tuned for more info, you’re gonna love what you hear!
