I usually don't take audience scores seriously when it comes to Netflix original shows. House of Cards has a pretty high audience score on RT as well, but it's legitimately the worst show I've ever seen. The Netflix effect will generally yield a high score for a hyped up show, regardless of its quality.

If it wasn't for the glorious HDR on this, I wouldn't have bothered watching even a second of it.

I think the link at the end of that ^ post has since expired, but to give you an idea of her family heritage and training (which first prompted me to write that post), here’s the pertinent excerpt from a still active link….

“Her father was a senior film color scientist for Kodak, and her grandfather developed one of the first 3D stereoscopic cameras. Her sister, Corinne Bogdanowicz, is also a well-respected colorist in Hollywood. Today, she is the senior colorist at Deluxe. Here, she talks about her career, her recent work and her experience using the Baselight platform.

What was it about the art of coloring that first attracted you to the work?

“I have a background in painting. I started as an intern at Kodak in Rochester, NY, while I was in college and learned all the technical aspects of digital color correction there. At the time, Kodak owned Cinesite in Hollywood, and after I graduated with my art degree, I went out to California to be an assistant on the Coen Brothers’ Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, which was shot by Roger Deakins (ASC, BSC). This was the first movie to finish entirely with the digital intermediate process. I basically worked my way up from there.

“I think I always bring my art and photography background to the work I do. I also have a minor in physics from college and I use that technical background – the physics and color science – to help make the most of a grading system’s color toolset.”

Thee article later goes on to state her feelings with regards to HDR....

Let’s put it this way. Last Monday, my 401k lost more money than the cost of the Sony Venice…..so, in other words, the Venice is substantially cheaper than the Alexa LF.

I'm afraid to look at the market today.

But do you feel the need for a shallow depth of focus to center the audiences' attention on the person/object of interest? And, at what point does it all become too much in this or that movie? So, I take it you personally don't feel it's overused in Altered Carbon?

On that ^ note, no winter Olympics HDR techno info at all today?
I was thinking that maybe some industrious OBS staffer at the games rocking a WFM could provide geeks with a peek into the peak nits measurement of the speculars, e.g. -

I'm the wrong person to ask. I'm a photographer that typically shoots medium format and likes to dabble in 4x5 and 8x10 when I can. Honestly, I hadn't even noticed it until I watched an episode last night after you mentioned it. And then, I only noticed it in close-ups, which is expected. To me, it feels like a natural part of the visual language they've established on the show. I've always felt that shallower focus lends more to a cinematic style, while deep focus seems more documentarian.

Does it feel excessive or distracting to you? Did you watch Okja or Dark on Netflix? They also use the Alexa 65. Dark used the 4k crop mode. And Okja used the full sensor.

Why is it bothering you so much, or appearing to bother you so much Mr P? I love that shallow focus look, a lifetime of watching movies shot anamorphic on 35 is a good primer (especially when they shoot wide open which reduces DOF even more) and proper large format stuff picks up that baton and runs with it. Maybe it does get overpowering in a serialised format, dunno. I'll have a look at some Carbon and get back to you.

I just tried saying "4K Olympics" and Xfinity had two 4K HDR previews (about 15 minutes total) which looked and sounded quite good. The main events start tomorrow in 4K and HDR.

It doesn’t , but I’m informed that on one cinematographer website, it appears to bother one or some.
