It’s not too early to mark one’s calendar…http://www.displayweek.org/
There will be Dolby representation.

I’m familiar with EvLee and actually recently indirectly complemented one aspect of his past assertions…. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post14713082 <- after reading, did you or anyone else subsequently work that link over at AVS?

Thing is though, as I found Tom to be way too critical of PQ (HDR10 and DV), in the past, I’ve found Ev to be unfairly critical of HLG. And I think exhibition of the Winter Olympics vis-à-vis DirecTV with HLG has proven his HLG negativity to be overblown. I’m not familiar with RLburnside, but wish him the best.

Ray, if you really like this stuff, don’t settle for being simply a consumer of goods. I think you’re still young enough to make your passion your career….https://www.abelcine.com/learn/calen...s-with-the-ica .

You’ll learn about things like Level 2 DV metadata.

Definitely a catalyst to adoption of the format. But never forget, as movie enthusiasts on Blu-ray.com, motion pictures will remain our bedrock of interest/enjoyment…..

I'm sorry but I don't remember where to find all the January discussion surrounding the issues with the Dolby Vision update on Sony TVs.

Am I safe to update the firmware on my 930E? I remember a couple posters saying it screwed up their displays.

Also, can I get DV content directly from the apps on the TV? Any recommendations? I'm not playing on buying a LG 970 or an Oppo 203 player anytime soon. (I'm using the x800). Should I just buy an Apple TV 4K? (I don't sub Netflix or any other services. I borrow non-4k Netflix from a friend).

That flick in 4K would give HDR a good dose of heroin needle shot under the tongue.

My TV hasn't been updated, I plead the 5th and point the gentleman towards the "Dolby Vision update for Sony TVs" thread that exists in this forum.

The update caused some sets (mine included) to intermittently blank out on 1080 sources.

As of now you can only get DV (after you update) from the internal apps. Apple is working on a Beta update and Oppo says theirs should be ready in spring. DV over HDMI should be coming soon.

The Galaxy S9 was announced, and there’s no mention of any HDR video recording capabilities: http://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/galaxy-s9/specs/

They also do stuff like abuse labor practices and cheat taxes and their customers (battery & speed anyone?).

I'm happy with my S8+ for now so won't be upgrading anytime soon.
I do note that Apple fans seem to always be eager to get rid of their current phones for the latest version.

The S8's photo & video camera is HDR, just not HDR10 or another standard.
The S9's camera isn't going to be a downgrade.

I'm also convinced their TV division and phone division are two separate entities (like Sony). Samsung Phone seems to have no trouble licensing Dolby (Atmos) for the new S9.

Rumors early on were saying the S9 would film in HLG HDR. Either this is a not-so-worthy of mentioning feature by Samsung or the rumors were false. Maybe they are saving the feature for the Note 9? We'll find out soon.

EDIT: some new info, a feature not mentioned in the presser today is that the Samsung S9 can encode its videos using HEVC.

Smh, I'm going to wait for the Oppo Low latency before I update the Z9D.
Just feels like lingering questions, and I have no urge to watch Netflix dv content. I'm jonesing to watch some of my dozen DoVi movies.

I use a flip-fun, from LG; it uses ultra vision.

Sony Xperia XZ2 brings 4K HDR video to smartphones: https://www.dpreview.com/news/045165...to-smartphones
Quote:
The Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are the first smartphones capable of recording 4K HDR video footage, using the Hybrid-Log-Gamma (HLG) standard.

The Galaxy S9 likely won't support 4K HDR recording: https://www.engadget.com/2018/02/26/...845-no-4k-hdr/
Quote:
According to Sag, Samsung might not want to enable the Snapdragon 845's 4K HDR recording feature to avoid deprecating one version of the phone over another. In the US, the S9 and S9+ will be powered by the Snapdragon 845, while models in Korea and some other markets pack Samsung's own Exynos chips. "Samsung has a thing where if they can't implement something across all their chipsets, then they won't implement the feature on their phone," Sag said. "They don't want people running out and buying the Snapdragon of the phone like it happened before."
