I tend to agree and I wouldn’t be surprised if in 10 years or so the phrase “home theater” is so uncommon in social vernacular, that it will need to be explained/defined to the newest generation of screen watchers, like with VHS tape, etc.

Not sure how many here have young children, but I can say that it is NOT unusual for when families actually do sit together in their family or living rooms in front of a TV that is on playing a movie, sports, etc. that the youngsters are watching stuff on their phones instead.

due to the fact that consumers at home are watching brighter images on their TVs, the options for diffuse white in the grading suites have been elevated. See 'or 200 nits' in the note at the bottom of the page - https://www.arri.com/en/learn-help/l.../lut-generator

there is that too, that the displays themselves might not be up to the task of properly rendering the HDR imagery so perhaps I shouldn't be quite so ready to throw people under the no-cal bus when it comes to HDR. Moving to a diffuse white of 200 nits in the mastering rather than the SDR-esque 100 would be a start, as the 200 wouldn't get smashed down as much by the tone mapping as 100 would. I mean, it's linear in how it would get compressed by the TV but when you've got more average brightness to start with then you can get away more with mapping it down, watching in a brighter viewing environment etc.

I forgot about that, thx.

Amazing, you can use your Samsung phone to play 4K Dolby Vision films on your 4K HDR Dolby Vision OLED TV (or LED), but you cannot use Samsung 4K BR players to do the same.

Don’t tell Geoff, he thinks I’m batshit crazy for suggesting the smartphone will replace the tv even in a 20 year timespan. Him and tons of other members.

'Home theater' falling by the wayside is not the same thing as TVs themselves dropping off the face of the Earth, we've ALWAYS been a minority in this hobby no matter how much the echo chamber of forums like this convinces us otherwise. But TVs themselves? I'd be more inclined to say that they'd get replaced by the sort of 'smart glasses' seen in something like The First - but even then people are still shown to be watching larger screens for big occasions, for even in 20 years time you're still gonna have many millions of people on this planet who'll still prefer to watch stuff on a TV rather than a phone or tablet. Or will it be on VR headsets? Watches? Autostereoscopic 8K 3D? I do get confused with all these prognostications of yours...

First 2½ minutes might be exclusively meaningful to DanBa and LordoftheRings and others fluent in French, whereas the rest of you guys need not worry as at ~ the 2m33s mark it goes to English with Peter – https://vimeo.com/319192937
intermixed with questions in French from the panel.
