Help?

Quote:
Okay so dumb question here, I picked up a Philips 5604 on sale, and I already had a Panny 4K player, but now I'm not getting all this cable BS. What do I need for the HDR? I thought HDMI cables were all or none? I've got one that says "high performance hdmi 1.3" and a bunch that say "high speed with ethernet 30v".

  • Some of the enhancements require more memory or a new SoC so they are being reserved for the next generation, which is scheduled for 2021 or possibly even later.
  • Other issues are getting my suggestions past all of the departments that have to approve the changes, engineering, product development, executive management and even the legal department
  • Some of the items on my list are being considered, but the engineering time and internal testing is a very long process
ok, Many thanks. "Scheduled for 2021 or possibly even later" sounds horribly like waiting a whole year for 2021 CES, only to have a repeat of this year! They'll say "yeah.... probably 2023" and then of course by that time, point to sales of discs as an excuse not to do anything.

Please can you expound on the first point? What enhancements have you requested that turn out to need a new System on a Chip?

I'm inflight to FL to visit my in-laws and don't have my file with me. Here's a few items I've requested off the top of my head, but do not think any of these require a new SoC.

- Disable or adjust the auto shut off when the player is paused.

- Do not converts Netflix 24p to 60p.

- Ability to move and change the size and type face of the closed captioning text.

- Add SACD and DVD-A support.

- Add more apps.

wuz up?
Any exclusives I’ve missed?

For instance, feedback from anyone across the pond attending this week’s PTS 2020? - https://tech.ebu.ch/events/productio...y-seminar-2020 as I’d imagine the HDR tutorials are also excellent this year too. And I notice come Thursday, Lucien Lenzen (https://tech.ebu.ch/events/2019/hdrworkshop ) is presenting.

Closer to SoCal, anyone attending the upcoming Hollywood Post Association Tech Retreat and signed up for Dolby Labs Walter Gish’s ‘Dynamic dynamic range’ breakfast roundtable? Walter holds several patents.

Not exclusive, simply a matter of public record which any googler can find; nevertheless, good stuff for member Staying Salty - Best use of HDR award winner - https://www.bydeluxe.com/en/get-to-k...020-ais-lumie/

Here's one given it's arriving to theaters with an HDR grade in about - https://yourcountdown.to/top-gun-2

Behind the scenes exclusive regarding the highly anticipated sequel, Top Gun: Maverick -
Tom’s Mustang (right), camera jet (left, with customized gyro-stabilized camera system circled) getting ready to take off (note the fuzzy jet exhaust) to film a scene (plenty of utility poles here next to the hangar as Geoff D and Waboman are likely suffering thru pole withdrawal by now)

both aircraft approaching each other –

Mustang veers up and left –

angle as seen from the camera in the trailer at ~ 1:30 timestamp –

When the disc doesn't have the HDR format you want and you need to take it out on the screen

Just don't buy it, and stay away from Chinese products, buy American certified HDR.

Make HDR great again? We are too far into the format to fix it now

Well, we now have 8K to keep us entertained and flow the economy, plus high frame rates for sports watching. For movies in 4K HDR Blu-rays I think I'll stick with 24fps for now. Gemini Man has a very detailed picture quality in 4K HDR, but I'd rather see that 60fps for watching golf, tennis, ping pong, hockey, the Olympic Games.

He's not wrong in that case though, Alita's actual usage of HDR itself is minimal. I mean, I still like the look of the UHD vs the BD and the visuals themselves are a showcase, but the HDR is about as far from showcase level as it gets. Bizarre. Reminds me of Chris Nolan getting that UHD related award a couple of years back, when he should've been smacked in the face for what he did to Begins on UHD.
