Competi....wha? [Geoff muses to himself: Hmmmmm, maybe I should back away from this place a lil' bit when even Penton thinks I'm having a niggle at him.] Do you see me regularly posting all manner of linked-to technical titbits in this thread? No sir, for this is your domain, and if I was that worried about any thunder being stolen then I would've posted the link myself in the first place.

I was just dead chuffed (translation: very pleased) that I came across something before you posted it, seeing as you pride yourself on having your finger on the pulse. Call it a note of personal pride rather than any one-upmanship.

Although not elucidated in this ^ or I doubt other reporter’s articles at this time, perhaps the final solution for live Dolby Vision is to create in real time (with only a 1 frame delay) ST 2094-10 metadata in a HDR processing unit positioned to function immediately in front of the encoder at essentially the end of the pipeline, thusly not having to string the metadata throughout the entire broadcast workflow.
From what I can tell: for the 5th year in a row they're pushing the boundaries of TV broadcast at the French Open, this year being the world premiere of DV for the tennis at the French Open? C'est magnifique!

I see and I’m embarrassingly flattered now …..and with that conversational exchange between us, I notice that this eclectic (rather than device-specific, like others) thread has breached the Ľ million viewership mark, which I think is no small feat

Kudos to all contributors….https://forum.blu-ray.com/misc.php?d...osted&t=276605 who helped in achieving this milestone.

You got it , although for some reason people in the industry are enamored, year after year, to use the French Open venue as a testing ground for cutting edge technology and personally, I’d prefer the Parc des Princes with another larger round ball team sport , but whatever.

Well you would have seen firsthand HDR + HFR (100 fps) in person from this project - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post13425318 , albeit from the front rather than the riders’ backsides.

Anyway, hope you’re having fun in a locale with such fabulous natural beauty . The Hawaiian islands have a special place in my (our) hearts as I met my wife there - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ea#post9159541 and we’ve been back several times since. As to the Hokulea ^, as mentioned before, the movie Moana has a basis in that sort of navigation without instruments skill set …. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...a#post12926270

As to Maui, the Makena State Park beaches were a favorite of ours when there.

Follow-up to exclusive early May (05-05-2017) posting -> https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...i#post13563059

Samsung folks now trying diligently to make happen a Q4 2017 installation of their cinema display based on that technology. We’ll see if they’re successful.

And I’m not necessarily talking Samsung here, but on a more futuristic note, large direct view displays with even a finer pixel pitch of .8mm as compared to - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...s#post13457032 are in the works.

Anyway, high nit, fine pixel pitch direct LED Cinema would make this less of a dilemma.

P.S.
Although, due to technical reasons, no UHD HDR content could be shown at the ATSC exhibit at NAB 2017, at least while I was there.

Sort of unrelated to HDR but related to TV technology in general, I am curious if you guys agree next year HDR + HFR (high frame rate) will be a big thing in 2018 models? And I don't mean just LG, who I know for sure will deliver this technology next year.

Some folks at AVS have been putting 1080p120 through their ZD9s. It's not 4K but even so, the amount of temporal resolution you'd gain for say sports content captured and broadcast at 1080p120 would be insane.

Obliviously most posters see the same data and filtered thru their biases (me included) form different opinions.

The one poster who shares his knowledge regularly across all the threads and at the same time is willing to weight all the facts is Geoff D. I really am looking forward to his reviews because he has knowledge and will tell it as he sees it. “I can handle the truth.”

I back Dolby Vision because as of today there is no HDR on 4K that is better. I like it because it will do all the work for me. I have no interest in tweaking my display, especially for every other movie. I just want to put the disk in and enjoy my movie. I believe that DV will constantly deliver the best picture that I can afford. Dolby Vision is basically for the common man. Not those who can afford thousands of dollars for their display, although I believe they will attain some measure of benefit.

I post on this forum because it is fun, to gain and share knowledge, and perhaps a few will make a more informed decision. I know I will.

Thanks for your time and Enjoy your movie.

The difference is obvious, especially when camera pans are combined with covering objects/people moving....the gain being synergistic.

Geoff, side-by-side....actually to be precise, displays are actually mounted top-to-bottom showing 1080p100 (BT.2100 @ 1000 nits) vs. 1080p50 (BT.1886 @ 240 nits) of basketball play, among other motion content now demoing in Paris.....which is why I kind of hoped that DanBa was in town to offer an onsite opinion. But I’d take Maui too.

My humble thanks to Salty but there's no chance of me getting big-headed about such things as I'm very much aware that I'm liked and loathed in equal measure, neatly summed up in this post by Ray: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...0#post13689610

Wow, ‘everyone else’ ? I had no idea…..IMO, you’ve always been a valuable member . Heck, in that case, don’t feel badly, during and after the Blu-ray vs HD DVD format war, between defending Blu-ray and exposing the ignorance of certain video gurus when they’ve spoken above their expertise and/or experience, I’m pretty sure my hate club (whether silent or vocal) is larger than yours.

And Staying Salty, don’t let the ‘food fights’ get you down either. I remember when more than one participant (not Adrian ) from other forums *authoritatively* claimed that HDR wouldn’t do much for animated movies despite being educated prior to their release.

Even on some ‘professional’ forums…..well, those inhabited by part time colorists and cinematographers not very busy at all in their professions, claiming not too long ago that HDR was a gimmick and caused considerable eye fatigue, actually they called it burning their retinas, when they hadn’t graded even one movie on a 4,000 nit Pulsar and are ignorant (not DanBa ) of even the most fundamental aspects of vision science.

Anyway, time for me to now watch Scotland v. England in WCQ and if the pitch is partially obscured by stadium shadows, I’ll not think about how well the transmission would have been if HDR was utilized and broadcast here in the states.

Thanks, I was feeling a little bummed last night because posters were talking past each other, rather than really thinking about what was said. No worries about me giving up, I am a fellow veteran of the HD DVD/Blu-ray war also. These little HDR skirmishes are child’s play compared to those battles.

I'd take the blu pill over red. With HDR10, Dolby Vision, ...it's all very very refined.
And it'll be back...(((3D))) Oh mighty blu, bring me tru

* Did you guys see Steven Spielberg's 1941 ?
