They promised they would do HDR10+, and if they start making players again, they will remember that they had promised that and will simply include it on their players. That comes down entirely to firmware. They never had a single thought about somehow producing an Ultra HD Blu-ray player backwards compatible as far as LaserDisc. They would have to develop an entirely new LaserDisc mechanism and pickup assembly. LaserDisc pickup assemblies are far more complicated than CD/SACD/DVD/(Ultra HD) Blu-ray pickup assemblies as they have to have a high signal-to-noise ratio for the analog video and audio on LaserDiscs.

UPDATE: It looks like Pioneer has, albeit quietly, left the business. Now there is the MAGNETAR for those that want a machine with all of these features, and it already has HDR10+ out of the box.

I hope you have that in writing, preferably theirs and not yours.

Apparently, you still haven't realized that I was joking about a LD/4K combo player; I have no such delusions. I'm instead holding out for that 4K 3D TV. I will never buy another TV until the manufacturers do as I demand.

Blu-ray 3D is only 1080p SDR and the Blu-ray Disc Association has no plans to develop an Ultra HD Blu-ray 3D specification. If you really want a 4K 3D display, you can find used 2016 models, but there was no such thing as HDR10+ back then, and Dolby Vision hadn’t yet found its way to Ultra HD Blu-ray.

You're wrong. I was promised a new 4K TV with 3D capability; they even pinky swore that they would.

I already own a 4K 3D TV. I want another bigger more betterer one; no need for HDR10+, though. I own way more 3D blu-rays than there are 4K discs that support HDR10+.

PS: I might own a copy of Splash, or I might not.

Again: what people spunk on random OOP titles is not the same thing as limited edition first-run pricing.

And it has been going on for decades, since a time when physical media was the mainstream alternative for media distribution. A title - or a certain edition of a title - goes OOP, becomes rare, some collectors desperately want it - that's the end result. Nothing new.

All this applies, with the added Blu-ray is the last of and, in most cases, the best of something on physical.

Your talking about a small percentage of titles that most already purchased under normal pricing. A small blip in the pricing model. Not to forget that some of these titles eventually get a re-release shifting the pricing back to the norm. It would take the discontinuation of physical media manufacturing all together to make this relevant.

This is a thread about Pioneer Ultra HD Blu-ray players, not rare Blu-ray Discs.

Tbf Samsung was no great loss considering the lack of quality of there players. OPPO, Cambridge and now potentially Pioneer are definitely a big loss.

Please do not say that Pioneer has discontinued their Ultra HD Blu-ray players until they release an article that says so. All the other companies who have discontinued their players have released articles. If Pioneer releases an article, even I will believe them. I am still waiting for a response back from them, so whatever they write me will be whatever the truth is.

UPDATE: It looks like Pioneer has indeed, albeit quietly, left the disc player business. Now there is the much more expensive MAGNETAR for anyone who still wants this type of machine.

I still have one of the first Blu-Ray players by Samsung. Anyway, the days of optical are coming to end. It won't be long before Sony and LG join the rest of the companies dropping optical disc.

Haven’t you heard honey attracts flys? If your so positive about Pioneer bringing you a player that just makes it super attractive to people that believe otherwise.

But you go right ahead, he’s found you now and there is no escape.

Trust me, I know an inside Pioneer guy, and I verified his encrypted message with my secret Pioneer decoder ring, and he said no new player.

I don’t think you really know an "inside Pioneer guy," let alone have a "secret Pioneer decoder ring." I'm the one who will be receiving the word, so stay tuned.

I don't know, but based on several of your responses, I'd say you need to at least invest in a good "sarcasm" decoder ring.
