The reference OPPO UDP-203 also only uses USB 2.0 for the front USB port. However the OPPO UDP-203 has two rear USB 3.0 ports. The Pioneer has one USB 3.0 port in the rear. All 2019 Sony Blu-ray players including their high-end flagship only has one USB port and its version 2.0 only. If you are using a solid state drive, hard drive, or flash drive that has a USB 3.1 or USB 3.0 enclosure then connect it to the Pioneer's USB 3.0 port in the rear for a increase in speed. UPDATE: Sorry everyone, I never thought the specs at Sound and Vision magazine would be wrong. but in reality both USB ports are only USB 2.0 on the Pioneer. quote "OTHER: USB 3.0 (rear), USB 2.0 (front), LAN, RS-232C" Read more at https://www.soundandvision.com/conte...7uZ7E8lzmBq.99 Last edited by HDTV1080P; 07-23-2019 at 02:13 PM. In these days and age USB ports lesser than version 3.1 and 3.0 is real cheap.
Sony are you reading this? And, the front USB port is the most amenable one (practicable to use), easiest to access; so it has the most beneficial use to be of no lesser version than 3.0 (3.1 even better). Sony and gang, are you reading this? |

And the Pioneer BDP-LX500 does NOT seem to have a USB 3.0 port on the rear, but 2.0 and only 0.5 A (same as the front one).

Sorry everyone, I never thought the specs at Sound and Vision magazine would be wrong.
quote "OTHER: USB 3.0 (rear), USB 2.0 (front), LAN, RS-232C" Read more at https://www.soundandvision.com/conte...7uZ7E8lzmBq.99 Also one can always tell the difference between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 by the color of the USB port. USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 are always blue color. To make matters worse according to the Pioneer owners manual only FAT16 and FAT32 file system is supported and only hard drives up to 2TB in size. Hopefully Pioneer one day will offer a software update to support exFAT and NTFS. If I did not already own a OPPO UDP-203, the Pioneer UDP-LX500 would be my first choice in Blu-ray players. However I am keeping my OPPO UDP-203 since it has many more input and output jacks including 3 USB ports with 2 of them being USB 3.0. Plus the OPPO allows up to 3 external USB hard drives to be connected at once and each hard drive can be up to 16TB capacity if the exFAT and NTFS file system is used. Hopefully in 2021+ Pioneer might offer input and output jacks just like the OPPO UDP-203. Last edited by HDTV1080P; 07-23-2019 at 02:09 PM. |

The funny thing is before the Sound and Vision magazine review I was mentioning to everyone that according to the Pioneer manual that both USB ports were 2.0. When that Sound and Vision magazine review was published I really thought they had verified the rear port was USB 3.0 and to make matters worse on the Pioneer website and Sound and Vision website the picture of the player is so small it makes it hard to see the color of the rear jack. USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 always have a blue color. I have wrote personal user reviews over the years for OPPO, Sony, and Panasonic Blu-ray players in order to share information with people visiting at Blu-ray.com (hopefully helpful information). However other times I get my information from professional review magazines like Widescreen review and Home Theater magazine. I know there are some people that purchase every single Blu-ray player that is released and then compare them and sometimes write very brief user reviews for all the players on the market. Personally I do not have the time to do that and it would be a waste of money to have a stack of players sitting around that I would never use. Again sorry about the USB 3.0 information I quoted from Sound and Vision magazine, everyone makes mistakes even professional review magazines. Over the years I have also found many errors in owners manuals and spec sheets that come directly from the manufactories website. |

USB 3.0 (blue) is much faster than USB 2.0 (black), and thus recommended for devices like external hard drives. You can typically identify a USB 3.x port or connector by its blue coloring, like the two USB ports on the rear of the Oppo 203/205 players. Also, 0.9 A and 1 A is better than 0.5 A - it allows to connect external hard drives without their own power supply. The Pioneer LX500's two USB 2.0 ports are rated @ 0.5 A. That's cheap for a hi-end 4K BR player. Last edited by LordoftheRings; 07-24-2019 at 06:20 AM. |

It's not about what YOU care or not, it's about what WE all care or not. ...We all are family, we live together in a highly developed and sophisticated and fully featured society...we are from planet Earth...the universal human race...and we want fast data transmission.
Some don't care about apps in a player, most do. Some don't care about USB ports, most do. I am very happy for you that you have no use for USB ports. And Wi-Fi should be common standard today...we live in a wireless age. |

As far apps in the player, I'm still at my wits in end trying to understand that when you get a Roku or Firestick for 30$ that blow away apps in players. Even the great Oppo got away from apps in their players. The only practical reason for using USB is to do a firmware update. However, you don't need it if the player is wi-fi capable. We don't need USB on the player to listen to music files anymore. |

Most people purchasing this Pioneer Blu-ray player will most likely have a wired home network and the Pioneer has 1Gbps home networking for firmware updates and to stream ones home 4K family movies over a network. Since I am on a 100% 1Gbps wired network, WI-FI would be a non issue for me. Also adding WI-FI might have raised the signal to noise ratio in the 2.0 stereo analog audio outputs. For $50+ there are external devices that will convert any Ethernet product to a WI-FI device for anyone that needs WI-FI.
USB on the Pioneer Blu-ray player is used for the connection of USB hard drives and USB flash drives for firmware updates, BD-LIVE, and reading home video and audio files. Having at least a 1GB flash drive attached is also recommended for resume play and BD-LIVE. Having USB 2.0 is not a deal breaker and is a minor issue. However hopefully Pioneer on future Blu-ray player models will offer USB 3.0 just like OPPO and Panasonic offers. If my OPPO UDP-203 were to break and could not be repaired, the Pioneer Blu-ray player would be my first choice and the Sony my second choice. |

The July 2019 price increase on Blu-ray players never happen since tariffs increase on China never went up. The 2018 Pioneer UDP-LX500 that has a list price of $1,099 can now be purchased for only $789 with free shipping on Amazons website. That is $310 off the list price.

$789 is pretty good, now we're talking sense. It reminds me the Oppo good years sense, like the $549 Oppo 203 for example, and the $1,299 Oppo 205.
All gone those good years now ... so it's nice from Pioneer ... LX500 Last edited by LordoftheRings; 08-02-2019 at 10:03 PM. |

Pioneer sure can do that, they are the King of the most affordable AV receivers packed with features and good looks.
...Even their very affordable Dolby Atmos speakers engineered by one of the best in the speaker's business, Andrew Jones. |
