Strange. Mine plays without a hitch so I guess it pertains to your specific setup. I downloaded the new firmware but haven't installed it as of yet.

In the AVS Denon/Marantz threads the chips were suppose to be available after June 2019 to manufacturers, and the first HDMI 2.1 models should be released in 2020.

The only currently released major brand models that can be hardware upgraded to HDMI 2.1 (likely next year as well) are the current "flagship" AVR Denon X8500H and AVP Marantz AV8805.

So how can the Pioneer Elite SC-904 and SC-704 be really HDMI 2.1 compliant which was previewed in August 2019?

The issue is the owners manual briefly mentions HDMI 2.1. Pioneer should not be mentioning HDMI 2.1 if the product really is HDMI 2.0b.

What manual says that? Go look at this SC-LX904 AU user manual it doesn't say anything about HDMI 2.1, only that HDCP 1.4/2.2/2.3 is used. How about the SC-LX904 data sheet also.

HDMI 2.1 is mentioned on page 220 of the SC-904 manual and page 218 of the SC-704 manual.

Joker played just fine in my LX500 with the latest firmware.

I found my first hiccup with the LX500. It's not a big deal but it is puzzling. I put in two different DV 4k discs, The Fog and The Hunt For Red October. The first time I played them it played in DV. I didn't watch them in one setting so when I went to resume them a day later they only played in HDR. I even went into settings and turned off HDR, restarted the player, and played the movies and somehow, even when turned off they played in HDR. Anyone else experiencing something similar? I'm running it with the latest firmware. Just weird....

I don't think you can go wrong with either one for movies (slight edge to the 9000) but if you're an audiophile as well as a videophile (like me) the LX500 is the best option.

You really think the Panasonic has better picture quality than the LX500?

What attracts me to the LX500 is the fact that it supposedly shares the same MediaTek processor as the Oppo 203 and CXUHD, so I'd be more familiar with the menu layout -- plus, it allows for zooming of non-anamorphic DVDs and stretching of full screen DVDs.

I also HATE the fact that the 9000 has that stupid, senseless automatic off feature after 20 minutes that can't be overridden.

What I DON'T like about the Pioneer is that it doesn't have wireless connection -- so you can't get firmware updates OTA. How are we supposed to know when new updates are pushed out save for checking in with Pioneer every so often? And the only way to load them to the LX500 would be through USB, right?

Overall, how does the LX500 do with DVD content? Does it have a noted chipset for DVD support? I still have many DVDs and while my original Oppo BDP-83 has been great, I can't see it lasting forever. Trying to plan ahead for my next player.

Someone in this thread mentioned "tone mapping" capability with the LX500...is this true, and does this work differently from Panasonic's HDR Optimizer?

Also -- has there been an HDR10+ support update for this model yet or not?

Nowhere near the tone mapping capabilities of the 9000.

But if you have a lumagen, and were wanting just one player, I'd get this player over the 9000. It has source direct, plus a region mod is possible.

The subtitle luminance on the Panasonic is fantastic too.
