The Pioneer LX 500, this thread's oft forgot topic, can be had on ebay, too:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Pioneer-UDP...gAAOSwBxpfhwYS

The price is a pretty good indicator of how in-demand it is also. Products that nobody wants do not increase in price.

How well do you like your Pioneer LX 500?

We do not hear from actual owners very often and I thought I would ask before the Prophet of Doom returns with more bleak, unwanted, and off topic prophesies.

Best player I've ever owned, the picture is like nothing I've ever seen before on any TV. I did have a issue with playback and Pioneer replaced the entire BD assembly to fix it under warranty. The player is very well built at about 35-40lbs. Only player I would want more is an oppo.

It's actually 22lb. And it's UDP, not BDP.

There is no format war on physical vs digital. Both options will always be available. Physical is the main format and digital, despite its popularity, is really only a "sub-format."

Vilya, now it's your turn to reply to the post I quoted.

I was really hoping to keep the whole digital vs. physical thing quarantined to its own thread. The topic infects too many threads as it is.

I will only say this here: digital distribution and physical distribution of purchased content can, and do, co-exist. I do not see them as being in a "format war." I am not talking about subscription streaming as it is analogous to pay TV services like cable and satellite.

Oppo made some of the best disc players ever. Even better than McIntosh which hasn't even done a UHD player yet but obviously the fancy glass build looks awesome they have Oppo beat on aesthetics. Value wise, Oppo was amazing value. Compared to McIntosh and other brands for a/v enthusiasts. It's to bad they wanted to focus more on smartphones. I thought Pioneer would fill the void left by Oppo but no manufacturer has done it yet. Pioneer has come the closest and Panasonic makes quality UHD players but they are not universal physical media players like with Oppo.

The 203/205 still some of the best UHD players and 103D/105D some of the best BD players out there.

Pioneer's players are compatible with the same discs as the OPPO.

Both can play the following discs:

Audio:
  • Compact Disc Digital Audio
  • Super Audio CD
  • DVD-Audio
Video:
  • Video CD
  • DVD-Video
  • DVD-VR
  • Blu-ray Disc
  • Ultra HD Blu-ray

Thanks for the correction, I see I added Pioneer there with Panasonic. I was thinking more of Panasonic.

Just for the record, the LX-500, and the Panasonic UB9000 are both from 2018 and we're about to enter 2021.

Needless too say all those tech rumor web sites making a deal about new products missing from CES don't know what they are talking about.

Most companies have gone the route that Apple does, stage online event, and announce products.
Again, altogether new models of 4K disc players are only needed if there is some substantial improvement over existing models. For example, oppo typically went a few years between new models of players and then only introduced a new model if there was some significant stride forward in their design.

There is no need to introduce a new 4K disc player unless some manufacturer has reinvented the wheel. They do not make new models without a reason to do so; these aren't new cars where you get a new one every year no matter how trivial the difference.

IMHO, not going to happen.

At one time Pioneer was a major player in home and automotive electronics as seen here. Once again IMHO, being sold to a Hong Kong private equity firm does not bode well for major R&D and cutting edge products.

It seams today's world operates on the cheap. If you want to be big in anything it must be cheap.

People that sale used items like this for a price almost double the amount new should be investigated for attempted rape, especially considering the fact that you now have to pay both taxes and shipping charges on used being sold from private persons.

Get a grip, there is NO ONE forcing anyone to purchase anything from eBay.

Hope you are not serious. I believe any player manufacturer knows the market and what it will support. If they determine a certain product will sell then they will manufacture it. IMO, most are waiting to see how the current pandemic plays out.

As you well know, aside from the current feature sets, no player out there really needs a model successor aside from Sony with their dumb DV on/off limitation.

Pioneer is a sloth when it comes to being a technology leader, none of their players were raced out to be competitive, just to fulfill a product category fulfillment eventually. They might have some more production runs next year, but a model replacement fat chance with a company not as elite as they once were, and sold to yet another investment group.
