Maybe not. All the firmware update refers in that .pdf left out North America.

What is the feature differences between the UDP-LX800 and the UDP-LX500. Also what was the price difference?

I just looked at the PDF manual for the UDP-LX800 and it supports 1Gbps networking over Ethernet which is a first for Pioneer Blu-ray players. However the Pioneer is using USB 2.0 instead of USB 3.0, plus NTFS and exFAT is not listed in the manual as supported file formats (OPPO UDP-203 supports these file formats). In addition there is no built in 1GB or larger internal storage for BD-LIVE in the Pioneer which means a external USB drive needs to be used. OPPO UDP-203 has a built in 1GB of internal storage for BD-LIVE.


I know people are disappointed that the UDP-LX500 and UDP-LX800 have no 7.1 analog audio outputs like the OPPO UDP-203. However not offering 7.1 analog audio outputs well become the new norm on flagship Blu-ray players. Also many new A/V receivers for 2018+ no longer offer 7.1 analog audio inputs. Also when watching movies HDMI bitstreaming offers a better sound quality since 7.1 analog outputs does not support Dolby ATMOS and DTS X.

For years and years HDMI was supposed to get rid of all other connections and make life easier.
I see no HDMI connectors yet on turntables...only USB ports.
And new flagship receivers from say Denon AVR-X8500H, just look @ the rear to see how simple it is.


But, some 4K BR players are very simple...like the Sony X800 and X700 for example.

Four connectors total, that's it.

And if you want the full enchilada, minus internal streaming, Oppo doesn't make the 203 and 205 anymore...they're out of business.

Pioneer is not Oppo, they are in business, and more simple with their offerings (connections), but offering a feature loved by many many many people...internal apps for streaming movies and music. ...Same with Panasonic new 4K BR players

UDP-LX500 is $1099, and the UDP-LX800 seems pegged at $2099. The previous players were $1000 and $2000.

HDMI only is common on the new flat panel and projectors (analog inputs are disappearing). A/V receivers in general well always have more inputs especially analog inputs since using a A/V receiver as the main video and audio switcher for one’s equipment is one important feature of a A/V receiver. However around 8 years ago S-Video disappeared from all A/V receivers including the flagship models, many newer A/V receivers no longer have 7.1 analog audio inputs. A/V Receivers now have less component video, less composite video inputs and less analog audio inputs when compared to years ago (A flagship A/V receiver for around $4,000+ well maintain more analog inputs and outputs when compared to a lower or medium quality A/V receiver) . Of course the latest A/V receivers do have more HDMI inputs when compared to models 5+ years old.

I realize that OPPO Digital INC no longer makes Blu-ray players. However until someone makes a Blu-ray player that has an overall better quality with the same or more interface features, the fact is professional reviewers well continue to use the OPPO UDP-203 and OPPO UDP-205 as reference players that all other Blu-ray players well be compared too. I was hoping that the new Pioneer Blu-ray players would beat the OPPO Blu-ray players, however it looks like people might need to wait for the second generation Pioneer 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players to be released. When Pioneer stopped making their 2008 model plasma screens in April of 2009, for the next 5+ years all other top of the line flat panel screens were compared to the reference 2008 Pioneer plasmas. Now people use a 4K Ultra HD LG OLED as a reference display that beats Pioneer in static resolution and black levels, but not in motion quality.

So I hope one day Pioneer makes a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player better then OPPO Digital INC. The Pioneer Blu-ray player input and outputs are disappointing, the specs in the manual for the minor details like no BD-LIVE onboard memory and no NTFS and exfat support is disappointing.

It doesn't seem like any kind of upgrade over the Oppo UDP-203 or UDP-205, I will probably not purchase it. The Panasonic UB9000 is more tempting tbh, Pioneer can make a great player and I am sure this will still be amazing just not up to Oppo standards though.

Oh, not only I'm late with the news but I don't think that in the year 2019 it is essential to have apps on a high-end universal 4K audiophile BR player.

People who truly want streaming apps they can buy another 4K Blu-ray player for $49-99.

Panasonic 820 and 9000 offer/support them, streaming apps. For the high-end videophiles.
Pioneer X500 and X800 are more for universal audiophiles.

I know my situation is unique, but I don’t use a receiver or processor. My analog connections go direct to the amps to make best use of the superior analog processing of the Oppo BDP-95. In order to get a comparable experience from a receiver or processor I would need to spend much more than the $2k Pioneer is asking for their player. If the LX800 really can perform at the same level as the top end Blu-ray players, then adding $5 to the cost to put analog outs would have like kept me interested. It’s an unfortunate omission, for my needs.

For another $100 7.1 analog audio outputs is a possibility on future models. The demand needs to be there to add 7.1 analog audio outputs. Some people are complaining about no streaming on the OPPO UDP-203 and the new Pioneer LX800/LX500.


When the professional reviews come out for the LX500 we well see how good they are. No streaming on the UDP-203 and UDP-205 hurt sales a little since people with projectors needed to purchase a Roku Ultra. A $50 Sony Blu-ray player has streaming. Personally I do not use streaming, however many people like the feature.


There is a possibility that the build quality on these Pioneers might be better then the OPPO UDP-203 when compared to the LX500 and when comparing the UDP-205 to the LX800. But the LX800 at this time has no planned USA release. Also the build quality on the OPPO players are really good and under ideal conditions could last 20+ years. But that does not mean that the quality of construction cannot be improved with Japanese engineers. Both OPPO and Pioneer are made in China using high-end Chinese parts.


Pioneer Elite products also come with a 3 year parts and labor warranty which is one year longer then OPPO Digital INC. Also OPPO players are no longer a option and in theory Cambridge Audio's OPPO clone well be going out of production in the near future. Which means for USA customers the UDP-LX500 for $1099 is the best and only option for those that need SACD, DVD-Audio, and Dolby Vision HDR.
