Read this in a recient review...
Quote:
In terms of overall brightness, measurements reveal that the 65Z9F can output around 1570 nits of brightness in its Cinema mode (on a 10% white HDR window), 1650 nits in its Vivid mode and, strangely, only around 1250 nits in its Standard mode. These are high figures bettered only by a handful of rivals

Least two Z9D published reviews stated over 1800 Nits on a 10% window.

Steve Withers review wrote...

Picture Settings – High Dynamic Range

Although the ZD9 is not certified as*Ultra HD Premium*by the*UHD Alliance, based on our testing there is no reason why it couldn't be if Sony so desired. The TV uses a 10-bit panel and can deliver a colour gamut of between 90% and 95% of DCI-P3 (depending on how you measure it) and the peak brightness on a 10% window was a massive 1,826 nits.*
Anyone wanting over 1800 Nits Peak Bightness on a 10% Window from a Dolby Vision TV...

the Z9D is probably the only TV.

A Reason for it's World Class HDR Specular Highlights.

That price really makes the z9F look like fool's gold. No other way to put it.

Me too.
My Z9D have zero DSE, Banding. Is it because of Firmware version?

Conclusion
Gray uniformity refers to how well a TV can display a single, solid color across the screen. It matters for any images containing a wide expanse of a single color, and in particular sports, where bad gray uniformity affects the appearance of playing surfaces. For each TV, we take 2 photos of the grays uniformity (dark and medium gray), calculate the standard deviation of the color values of the pixels, and then calculate the amount of dirty screen effect that is present for each picture.

Unfortunately, there are no steps that can be taken to improve gray uniformity – it’s entirely down to the panel you get. If you find yourself with uniformity that you cannot live with, you should exchange your TV for a different unit, or even a different model.

I got the 65 Z9D from Bestbuy this week. Won't be able to use DolbyVision just yet as I only have a LG UP870. Gonna try to pick up a Sony UBP-X700 this black friday season if I can find a good price.

Until FW fixes Sony TV Dolby Vision playing HDR10 now gives Spectacular PQ results. On par or better than HDR10+ according to Vincent Toeh of HDTVtest.

I play disc from my LG UP970 to my Z9D. Incredible PQ nearly like my Dolby Vision from my LG G6 OLED with the UP970. UP970 can only send HDR10 to my Z9D.

When I use my OPPO 203 to Z9D I turn off DV at the OPPO.
So it sends HDR10.

I know my Dolby Vision. Having some 30+ DV Movie discs. And maybe more++ VUDU DV Atmos streaming movies not of same title as my disc.

The Z9D's did get an Dolby Vision update didn't they. I understand it's Low latency which i don't fully understand. I'm just beginning to read up on this stuff.

That DV to Sony Z9D causes Dim PQ.

Low Latency DV in Sony TVs means that DV Software is Lite.

So most of the DV workhorse duties must be done by the Source Media Player. Like x700, Oppo 203.

OPPO worked extensively with Dolby. To be Low Latency DV compatible. Yet! Much work is still needed. Maybe both Disc Players and Sony DV TV's needs more Firmware updates.

HDTVtest's Vincent Toeh says this may take some time. Even lots of time to get everything DV in place.

So I guess if one want's to stream Netflix in DV. It would better to use a player like Sony x700 or one of the Panasonic players?

On Vincent last video has was talking about Dolby Vision on the new Ultimate X1 processor series (Z9F & A9F) which now has two Dolby modes ( Dark and Bright) and the dark mode is dim. However, the did not state/test the older TV's (Extreme) with an external source. However on the older sets DV is not dark, but has some issue with raised blacks on some titles, unless you use ACE (Advance Contrast Enhancer on Low). They both need work, but the Z9D mode is not dark/dim with the same issue as the new A9F.

Netflix DV works fine on the Z9D if you don't have a external player yet. I use both without any problems. However many people rather the external app because of the Android OS on the TV's. While you wait for Black Friday us the internal apps. You can't go wrong with a X700 or the Panasonic.

Of all the issues I have with my 65", DSE is not one of them.

Call it what you will - assist, not assist - blocked Cinema Pro, not blocked Cinema Pro - you're both missing the point: The settings that are adjustable do not work in the same manner as they do HDR10 and do not correct the damaged PQ DV causes on my Z9D. You can't get Cinema Pro HDR10 PQ in DV mode on my Z9D. You get crappy PQ in DV.
No, YOU get get crappy PQ in DV. Other people get on just fine, grey bars aside.

With both LG UP970 and OPPO 203...
I have played many, many 4K DV Discs onto my LG G6 DV Signature OLED. Very Bright. Exquisite picture quality and specular highlights.

Attach my LG UP970 and OPPO 203(its settings for DV) to my new Z9D and...

LG UP970 DV Disc presents Magnificiently to my Z9D. Practically as good as Dolby Vision. Tho its only sending HDR10 to my Z9D. As Vincent Toeh saids very reciently... Sony TV's now makes HDR10 disc look like HDR10+.

Play the same DV Discs from my OPPO 203(Settings for DV) onto my Z9D and my DV results are Dim. Dim, Dim. Like HDR is not even activated.

Everyone Understand. My new Z9D received everything in one firmware update. Some peoples had their Z9D as long as 2 years plus. And gotten many firmware updates. Maybe some even from a storage stick. Their DV from HDMI on their Z9D may not be Dim and DV HDR works fine.

I have confirmed that Chromecast Ultra connected to the Onkyo tz-rz830 AVR then thru its HDMI connected to the Z9D works fine with magnificient DV picture quality. Vudu from the ChromeCast Ultra sends Atmos, UHD Dolby Vision.

The Onkyo tz-rz830 has Atmos and Dolby Vision, HDR10 passthru. Its connected to the Z9D's HDMI 2 full bandwidth port.

You can Cast VUDU directly to the Z9D's internal CC unit(not thru the Z9D's HDMI's port) but PQ won't be great. And you won't be able to get Atmos.

Streaming DV processing is not the same as UHD Disc Player DV processing. Disc has DV Meta Data on top of HDR10.

CC Ultra, Onkyo AVR, Z9D VUDU DV Movie streamed are not dim.

Your problem is you need to adjust the Dolby Vision mode picture settings.

It's a separate mode like Cinema Home or Custom or Game.

Press ACTION MENU on the remote and then "Picture Adjustments" while a Dolby Vision movie is playing from the Oppo.

Did many, many settings changes. Not Happy.
I used ACTION Menu and their settings changes maybe 100 times now. And of cource on my G6 OLED, E6 OLED I have up to 2 years experience doing PM adjustments.

AT DV PM___Brightness Max, Contrast Max, Gamma 0, Black 50, adv contrast enhancer high, XDR high still dim compared to HDR10 on Z9D.

DV PM Live Color at Medium helps a little.

With even all these Z9D DV is dim. HDR is weak.
Vibrancy is not that great.

Until Sony Z9D do another FW...
I'll set my OPPO to "Forced HDR" and watch DV Disc on my Z9D in HDR10.

After seeing his reply, my hunch is he's watching HDR10 in Vivid.

What Picture Mode you using?
Brightness 38 would be extremely dim on my Z for HDR.

for HDR10, in Cinema Home or Cinema Pro (take your pick), Brightness should be MAX, Contrast should be 88 - 91 (per your own Black area detail liking). and XDR = Max.

Yikes. Brightness 38? Is XDR off too? C'mon now...no wonder you're not satisfied.

DV is fantastic from my Oppo 203.

And please guys read up on the profiles for DV so misinformation isn't spread. There's no such thing as "lite" DV.
