Battle Los Angeles was mainly shot on 35mm I think...
Skyfall had a 4K DI, though it was shot on the 2.8K Arri Alexa. |

Unfortunately your list is probably very close to complete... not many of these digitally shot movies get 4K finishes.
If we're counting movies that have yet to come out, I believe After Earth will be the first 4K DI made with Sony's new 4K camera. |

Yeah, I have discovered in my research that virtually every film shot digitally in 4K or even 5K gets a 2K DI. It doesn't make much sense IMHO. I wonder how much money a studio saves by scanning a digitally shot film at 2K instead of its native resolution.

Rendering visual effects for an entire movie in 4K resolution requires a lot more time and resources. Something, I think many studios are unwilling to indulge at the moment. Unlike 3D production or 3D conversion, cinemas haven't been selling movies in 4K at a higher ticket price. Unless we start seeing cinemas selling 4K screenings separately with different ticket pricing, the transition to 4K production will be quite slow. And it doesn't help that the general audience are also paying a massive ticket price for Digital IMAX DMR blowups from 2K DIs. So as you can see, it's not about how much can the studios save from utilizing a 2K DI. But whether or not it will yield an improved profit when the films are released. There's lots of factors to consider. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but Sony seems to be the strongest proponent in pushing for 4K DI. Obviously, leading the way for other studios to follow suit. From your list, there's: 1. After Earth 2. The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance 4. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 5. The Green Hornet 6. Men in Black 3 7. The Smurfs 2 8. That's my Boy 9. This is the End 10. Total Recall 11. White House Down The other films don't seem to be as visual effects heavy. It will probably be a couple of years before 4K Digital Production will go into full swing. |

Are they upscaled from 2.8K to 4K for DI, and then downscaled to 1080p for Blu-ray? This doesn't make any sense.

For you 4K digital aficionados, I see the Redray player is now shipping…http://www.red.com/store/products/redray-player
Price point aside, I’m reminded of a classic commercial from the ‘80s - Or, where’s the content? I mean even die-hard resolution freaks can watch oh so many landscape videos in 4K without ![]() |

Yes it was and point of up-scaling was discussed (especially read the hyperlinks for addition info), here…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...on#post7581588
In a nutshell, if you have access to an excellent up-res tool (which elite post houses do), and an excellent source with high pixel quality and low signal-to-noise-ratio (which the Alexa is), upscaling from 2.8K -> 4K can yield an excellent looking outcome, e.g. Skyfall. The only caveat to the above which I would include is that if the camera is pushed beyond its optimal operating limits then that could degrade the final result…but again, that is a source issue. |
