I just found out that JoJo Part 4 Diamond is Unbreakable's Japanese Blu-ray releases had 2.1 audio. That's right, stereo and subwoofer. Not sure what codec, though... The more interesting question is whether or not VIZ will replicate it in their release.
KAZE's French release has LPCM 2.0 instead, and while I'm not sure if the JP discs have a regular stereo mix as well, I wouldn't be surprised if they did. |

Stupid question I suppose, but does the Bluray format actually support 2.1 lossless audio? I seem to recall in Psycho-Pass's case at least that the audio was bog standard DTS. I also seem to have it in my head that the complete BD Box later on had Stereo PCM audio instead. |

Well, the German Made in Abyss release is disappointing. 200+ minutes for a BD50 was a bit too much after all.
Banding in almost all dark scenes. (I know pictures of the TV are not ideal but it's all I can offer) https://imgur.com/a/r2InFQm I tested it with a PS4 Pro and a random Samsung 3D Bluray Player on an LG OLED B7. It was more noticable with the PS4 but still apparent with the Samsung BD player. Brighter scenes look fine but Made in Abyss has a lot of dark scenes (No pun intended). ![]() Amazon.de says this release has 7 episodes... If Funi manages to get fine PQ with 9 episodes/disc, why couldn't Universum? |

That's about 9 episodes worth of content. If those interviews were put on a separate BD-25, perhaps that would solve the issue?
What does the bitrate average? Even if you don't rip the disc, the player should show the bitrate as it changes throughout the episode (except the PS4- Sony cheaped out there). |

It is more taxing on the compressionist, though. But, FUNimation has monkeys running the encoding, so regardless of space, there are always some issues, minor to major. Though, it is never a good idea to have more than 9 Episodes at most, regardless of the compressionist’s ability.

One thing I’ve noticed is that in anime releases, the Bitrate isn’t that variable. Sure, it can go up or down depending on what’s on screen, but I only have one release with a wide range- JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Set 1 by VIZ.
The average is 27.90 mbps, which is better than anything FUNimation does, but it doesn’t tell the full story. When watching it on my TV and looking at the Bitrate viewer, it has massive shifts. The low is generally around 9 or 10 with a high of 49 in a few instances. Generally it ranges in the high twenties to low thirties, but the OP (in this case, Bloody Stream) averages around 33 which is Japanese territory. The set is very well encoded, despite the fact there is a brightness issue. When watching it, it is never noticeable. It looks clean and clear. If you cannot stand the fact it is ever so different, get the UK set, which has correct brightness, but lower bitrates. If you’re in the US like me, I wouldn’t go through the trouble of importing it, as it is hard to tell when watching on a TV and is only noticeable when looking at screencaps side to side. Also, the subtitles have a very nice font. Better than what FUNimation uses. I’ll upload a photo later, but they look real nice. But, when viewed from a good distance, it may be a little small. I have a 49” display and sit probably 3 metres (9 or so feet) away, and it’s readable, but if my vision got worse, it would be an issue (I’m sure my parents would have trouble reading them). |
