While it is true that such a high exposure resolution may seem redundant, and I would have to scan it in 4K, the mere fact that its on a format like 70mm would make it a timeless viewing experience.

The reason I want to export the digital files at 16K and expose the movie onto 70mm would be a means of "future-proofing" the movie.

I mean, look at all the anime mastered digitally without taking into account how they would look outdated and smeary when upscaled onto newer video formats later on.

Contrast this to traditionally-drawn anime on film which are then scanned at high resolutions and look great on new video formats; (Provided the restorations and compression are good.)

Scanning technologies improve, and compression gets better. But actual pixel count does not change... I want to provide an answer to this problem by mastering onto film.

This episode is so unlike the rest of the FMP series... I wish I would have ripped another one.

One of the oldest anime Blu-Ray, and it still looks amazing. I think Maiden Japan said they were using the same encode as Bandai as no new master was available. It's kind of a bummer Bandai only kept the underscan file. We don't use HD CRT anymore . It could be interesting to anyone who feels like comparing it to the other existing releases from Germany, UK or Maiden's release.

I've only watched the Anime Limited version of it, despite having the Sentai version as well. Wow, it is a stunner though. What a remarkably beautiful film.

Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise (Anime Limited - UK/FR 2015)

Media-Info from the Anime Limited BD (this is the French version which is the same as the UK one). Keep in mind I always remove dub tracks when I rip MKVs so the English and French dubs are missing:

I would link a picture of the bitrate but I don't have enough posts in the forum to post links (I discovered that the hard way when I made a post comparing the Spanish edition of A Silent Voice with the Japanese one that has been stuck in moderation hell for days)

Assuming it works, you can DM me the link (or split the link in pieces) and I'll repost it here. I think also some sites are blocked so you may need to (?)

put it in code tags
In case you want to provide matching captures, the frame number is given in the filenames in the gallery. I used raw mpv by the way.

Wasn't the Escaflowne Ultimate Edition movie disc a port of the Funimation disc? This post seems to imply that it is.

No, it's not a port of the Funimation movie disc.

Funimation movie disc only has promo video and trailers as extras and different menu design. UK Ultimate Edition movie disc has Bandai BD extras and the menu was designed by Brady Hartel.

Thanks to KaizerChef, here's a comparison of Anime Limited release with the Bandai 2007 Blu-Ray of Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise:
Code:
https://slow.pics/c/gXGB04Bv
AL release bitrate, see my post above for Bandai's bitrate.

As expected, it appears to use the exact same master file as the one for the USA BD except for the brightness, which does not seem right for AL's release. See screenshots #2, #5, #6, #7 to really see what's going on. Bandai blacks aren't anymore on AL version. There's also a loss of grain, especially apparent in #7.

Baccano! (Black Box - France)
Authoring: IDP Home Video
Comparison with JP BD (JP BD shots courtesy of hissatsu via BigOnAnime)
Code:

Additional screenshots

There's some slight color difference, especially in the reds. I think it was done on purpose because the JP BD commonly shows pixelated areas in this color i.e the Baccano chocolate bar (#2), where on the FR blu-ray it is kind of mitigated. The reds are less vivid. At least blood does not look like jelly but rather more natural to me.
It might have been done to remove some banding too, e.g brown coat & face of #6.

Beside that, it's on par with the Aniplex set but only 15€ or so.

I don't know if hissatsu's screenshots have correct colors. Their screenshots of Lain JP BD have the wrong colors.

Why did they reauthor a disc just for the one set? How weird.

AL probably wasn't allowed to use the extras for standard edition.

The reds are less vivid. At least blood does not look like jelly but rather more natural to me.

They are indeed wrong. If anything the French BD appears to be slightly darker.

Actually, FR BD brightness is the same but the screenshot looks darker because of what Slowpics does to the PNG metadata.

Yeah, I was literally just about to post this. I noticed that the shots saved locally look the same, but not on slowpics. Never seen that before.

Wonder how the colors ended up wrong when he did that comparison nearly a decade ago. Wonder if that's also the reason for this on Spice and Wolf.https://fandompost.vbulletin.net/for...959#post302959

He used to do those sorts of comparisons quite often, it's been 4 years since he last did one (I embedded that earlier in the thread last year). That reminds me, there are 5 old posts of his I intended to embed remaining, but never did, though they're kind of redundant at this point in time, but I guess I'll still embed them soon. BTW, when looking through his posts, he posted this regarding Kodocha's JP SDBD in October.

But unbelievably, they appeared to have used masters meant for broadcast, with darkening of scenes with a lot of high speed motion (Thanks Pokemon!). I really can't believe they did that.

Eh, screw it, I'll get those down now despite how redundant they seem, especially at this point in time. I had these links saved in a list for years, compiled from this I forever have saved in my bookmarks. This should be the last of these.

I still have the Place DVD lying around, mainly because it's not worth trying to sell.

Macross Frontier: The False Songstress

The characters are a lot less in the dark about things than in the series, except for maybe Ranka, and even she gets a clue. Casting "un-douchebag" on Brera is also helpful. The CGI models are definitely more detailed, next to none of the wonky/off model animation from some episodes of the TV series remains, maybe a few seconds worth. Quite a few of the skies look almost "Shinkai-esque". I've heard some complaints that there wasn't enough action, but the concert/battles scenes near the beginning and end take up about a third of the movie, and the action choreography is insane - I have no complaints. So I took a few screenshots...

These are from the extras, from "commercials" Sheryl and Ranka did, though these aren't used in the movie that I recall. LOL at the specs on the sunblock in the final screenshots - SPF 10000+, blocks wavelengths from 1 picometer - 400 nanometers. Oh sure, it blocks x-rays and UV, but what about gamma rays? What a ripoff.

I'd post comparison shots from the HD Remaster DVD Box, but I sold that off months ago. It looked good, but had quite a bit of aliasing. Hard to get clean motion shots off the R1 CPM DVD because of all the ghosting.

Well, technically it's not a new telecine. It's the telecine used for the HD remaster DVD box released like 2 years ago. But that's fine. As for lemons, there's Blue Lemon No. 6 next month. Japan, stop with the QTS upscale crap, please.

Record of Lodoss War OVA

Several episodes looked rather "muddy" at best. But no matter how many different releases it got (Original VHS and LD, LD box, DVD box and singles) it never got a new telecine. None of the releases look particularly good - no component masters ever. And as for CPM's "remaster" - No, just no. Well, it took more than 20 years, but it finally got what it needed.

This release looks excellent. Massive improvements in detail, color, everything. Film grain has probably undergone some reduction, but it appears to have been done with a light touch - no signs of clumping and the grain is still quite visible. Other than more exorbitant than usual Kadokawa pricing, I have no complaints. The 195 page color book is nicer than what's usually included as well.

DVD screenshots are from the R2J DVD box from some years back (which I'll be keeping for the soundtrack CDs).

Remastered? Are you talking about where Sentai did a Blu-ray for shows that didn't have them in Japan? Only Kaiji comes to mind (S1 is natively SD, S2 is in HD, but was DVD-only in Japan). Then with Maiden Japan there's ToHeart 2. They released that on Blu-ray here, but it never got a Blu-ray in Japan, and it's NOT an SDBD. ToHeart 2 is from 2005, I got the Blu-ray recently, and it's definitely not an HD production, though I've not looked too closely at it. Sentai/Maiden Japan never got on the doing their own upscale train like FUNimation and VIZ did.

No I'm talking about Blu-ray's they re-released as part of a complete collection etc. where they actually remastered the disc from the previous release instead of just repackaging the old discs.
