Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie: Over the Rainbow - Funimation BD vs Bandai BD

https://slow.pics/c/wu1RfZzJ

Dark gradients suffer quite a bit in Funimation's BD compared to Bandai's BD. The encode on Bandai's BD was done by Sony PCL with SBMV dithering.

BTW, the dub mixing is terrible. lmao @ bass-boosted muffled music.

I'm so, SO glad someone else notices this. Funi's music mixing for their dubs has been absolutely atrocious for a few years now, even affecting the stereo simuldub web streams. Steins;Gate 0 is one of the absolute worst examples of this I've heard. You can witness the OP in all it's bass boosted shittyness with both audio tracks here. I have absolutely no idea who decided this approach was an improvement in any way whatsoever.

People noticed the mixing problems in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, but I guess that was an outlier because of DB's large fanbase.

Waveforms of the first 7 minutes (order: L/R/C/LFE/SL/SR)

Funimation dub

Original Japanese (Bandai BD)

Notice the large gap in the dub center channel; that part is during a song. Along with the bass boosting etc., the song is mapped very differently in the dub.

Discotek is doing a steel book release for Cyber City Oedo 808, I've heard that it'll be an improvement over the previous release much like the Angel Cop steel book was.

Cat's Eye: The Complete First Season - Discotek Media BD

Good release for this sometimes overlooked show from City Hunter's mangaka, and one of the few times TMS adapted a Shonen Jump manga
Hope they're able to release Season 2

Video:

The scan for this show technically could be a telecine, as it was done interlaced at 29.97 FPS. For this release it's been IVTC'd, and I don't notice any artifacting from that process.
The actual scan quality is very good, though it can get very grainy at some points, heh.
It never seems to get obnoxious however

A special highlight must be given to the main bonus feature (aside from a TV ad), which are creditless verisons of the OP/ED.
They are taken from 35mm, and look amazing
The image quality blows away how it looks in the actual episodes

Just Japanese LPCM here (unsure if it's mono or not)

Everything seemed to sound very good, nothing really of note

AB remastered the TV Specials on DVD so that comparison is a bit unfair and unbalanced, but ultimately the TOEI remaster is superior.

The Blu-rays are a mixed-bag whereas the Amazon version feels much more refined and what fans actually want. Average DBZ fans will be happy with the BDs and see nothing wrong with it.

Who knows if we'll get another release of Votoms, so I'd grab the complete set sooner rather than later. Nearly all of Maiden Japan's releases are listed in RightStuf's "Last Chance" section and many things went OOP quickly.

Matt Greenfield still runs Switchblade Pictures even though they've not done much in years and their website is gone, and I don't know if this is still the case but... "(2009) Creative Consultant - Sentai Filmworks"
