Rule number one: Never trust Neofilms to not screw something up badly.
Rule number two: See above.

Haven't searched but have there been any BD screencap comparisons posted yet for the GKIDS and Disney release of Whisper of the Heart?

If not I can provide a comparison for anyone interested.

I don't own the UK release, so I'd wait until someone here who does can comment on it.
I got my UK copy and confirmed that subtitles are NOT forced on Disc 1&2, but they are locked on Disc 3&4 (I can turn subtitles off through some player softwares like DVDFab Media Player).

Isn't this a result of the upscaling being outsourced, which has been discussed before?

The BD was mastered by Q-Tec, right? I’m assuming they did the UHD as well. An automated process will never be as good as when mastered by hand (as in, by a compressionist).

Looks like I was right. Q-Tec did it:
Quote:
Kaysen:
Any idea who / what studio was responsible for the HDR mastering of this film? It’s UHD presentation was breathtaking and it would be some really interesting insight as it’s only one of two anime (Gundam Thunderbolt) to be mastered in 4k and graded in HDR. I watched the UHD version earlier and just finished watching the 1080p disc to see how it compares and the difference was night and day — it honestly didn’t even look like the same movie. It’s also hand down one of the best UHD presentations I’ve ever seen, even beating a lot of common reference UHD films (Mad Max, Life of Pi, Deadpool) that I own. HDR was also used to great effect — the highlights in the stars, reflections, the sunny haze in scenes, the lenses flares, comets, Tokyo’s skyline, and reflections off buildings (it just fits Shinkai’s style so perfectly). I’d love to know who was in charge of overseeing this because not even Hollywood films use HDR to such great effect. I’ve also never seen any animation with as natural, gorgeous looking colours. Who ever was responsible for this did an incredible job, it truly is reference-level ultraHD and that person is worthy of some serious praise.

I’d also be really interested in knowing the process they used to master the film. I’m guessing most cuts were still scanned at 1080p but CGI effects were rendered at 2k or higher as there was a discernible difference in detail between the 1080p and 4k version at times. At any rate it would be really different to conventional films which are filmed at 4-8k, downscaled to a 2k DI then reupscaled to 4k for release.
Quote:
Ultimatemegax:
The 4k upscale was handled by Q-tec (yes, that one that everyone goes “oh shit” about). The original DPX master given to them was a 1920×1080 file with 4:4:4 RGB and encoded in 10-bit. They took that and then upscaled it and graded it in HDR afterwards using FORS EX PICTURE, their new system for upscaling. They didn’t have any of the source materials like the photography or CG scenes; only the final version.

Since they had the DPX master instead of something previously encoded into a lossy format, they were able to make the upscale look wonderful. The actual mastering of the film was done by IMAGICA, so it’s strange to see a transition for the home video release. That likely had an effect on the visual differences between 1080p and 4k since two different mastering studios played around with them.

If you can read Japanese, there was a fantastic technology interview with the main staff in charge of upscaling it posted last week: http://www.phileweb.com/interview/article/201707/20/469.html

They also talk a bit about the encoding work done for the DVD/BD/UHD releases on page 6 and 7 of that interview. DVD/BD are encoded directly from the DPX master.

I get that it would cover server costs etc. but doesn't that count as charging for content that doesn't belong to them, being unedited screenshots of the IP?

I'm looking for some comparisons between the different releases of Sword of the Stranger if anyone has access to the three releases (Bandai, Funimation and Anime Ltd.). Thanks!

I can provide some screenshots and the mediaInfo for the @anime Ltd release but unfortunatly my bandai (Beez Europe) BD don't want to load on my PC Blu-ray Player anymore, I don't know why, so no comparaison possible.
I don't have the funimation edition.

You rock! Did anime Ltd. fix the issue with the subtitles not playing during the scenes with dialogue spoken in Chinese? I know Funimation's release had this issue but it was never publicly acknowledged.
