on the contrary, I’d thought this (similar in appearance to the XYLA test chart http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthr...-21-stop-chart)
HDR notification on the 8 million+ viewership thread (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...u#post18517214) from last Tuesday, was….a buzz kill as compared to other ‘breaking news’. I’ll add a video link in a P.S. there now to spice it up a bit for you. |

I just saw that player-led vs tv-led DV comparison video and am curious what everyone's take is on that. I saw comments from Stacey Spears that it is a bug with player-led DV in every UHD player. But from the comments I read Vincent only tested it with an Oppo 203 and UB9000, so he's missing a lot of other players. If this is a bug why hasn't it been fixed? Surely at least one brand must be aware and capable of fixing it with an update?

It's not really a "bug", it's just how the player led version is and Dolby can't be arsed to fix it. The Panasonic's output is slightly cleaner for chroma alignment than the OPPO owing to their respective internal processing, though both show the banding/posterisation that Vincent pointed out. But something to bear in mind is that the S&M Montage is a literal torture test for HDR, it pushes colour and brightness to extremes that the generic tone map in the player-led profile can't handle, whereas most 'real world' content does not get nearly that colourful or bright.
So when I watch player-led Dolby Vision content on the ZD9 other than the Montage I don't see any banding or clipping of colour relative to the HDR10 version, indeed the DV usually fixes any mild posterisation that might be visible on the HDR10 (if it's not source related, which does still happen even in DV). That's why I'd like to see Vincent test this further with other DV content. It's true that 'real world' DV playback being basically unaffected is down to luck more than anything, and I'd very much like to get a proper TV-led implementation, but I'm not upgrading what is still a stonking TV just for that. |

So I take it he's probably just shilling then and trying to hype up the TV-led models coming out for more sales. He's not dumb so I'm sure he knows it's only readily apparent on the Montage then and specifically chose that and not any real-world content.
And I'll admit that 83" A90J is tempting, but I'm going to be sticking with my Z9D as well. While the heatsink definitely addresses a big issue with OLED technology, the other issues still turn me off. If it had 3D it would make the decision harder though. I hold out hope that some new 3D models will come out around the time of Avatar 2. I don't watch a ton of 3D but the ones I do love I wouldn't want to watch any other way. |

That video conveniently came out just before these new TV-led DV models were announced. While we like to crap on him for not having any taste or understanding of artistic intent with HDR application, he is a very intelligent, technical person. He chose to only show those Montage scenes for a reason without any mention that there is little real-world difference.

Eh, that's great and all he took it seriously but hundreds of millions of people have taken it seriously. He's not special in that regard except that he's virtue signaling it.
But I'm probably just bitter about that Ravens loss last night, I've seen that you're a Ravens fan too. I hope the Bills win next week though. |

1. High bit rate doesn't mean much in real life application.
It's like the best ESS Sabre DAC without a good implementation. 2. Today with one Gigabyte/ps high speed Internet, it is moot. Only the people below say 150Mbps Internet speed are @ disadvantage. 3. Audio streaming with high-res is of no concern for roughly 95% of the overall videophilia population. Besides, not all movies have a superior audio music soundtrack, except for LOTR 4K of course, and the likes. And it's not from Sony; The Fifth Element is though. 4. Ok, Dolby Vision could have been better thought out from Sony. 5. Sony Columbia is limited in titles; that's of course another good reason Sony streaming is behind. 6. Same for specific Sony model TVs. Anyway, streaming is still the world we live in today and tomorrow. 4K Blu-ray discs are becoming more a niche market; with $30 per new disc title. That's my view Vincent, reciprocal to yours on most points, with a twist. Last edited by LordoftheRings; 01-19-2021 at 01:40 AM. Reason: Typo |

Oh yes, one GB per second is available in some parts of USA and Europe.
Some people even have more ... 1.5 GB per second. Sorry, typo. And there's this ... https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/...c-single-fiber |
