loved this show but felt it was starting to slide and badly (especially last season) But this season they have gotten it back on track and so far I am loving it once again. =)

I grew up reading Superman comics for a long time, but I don't consider Smallville as a Superman series. The series plays more like a prime time soap for teenagers and young adults. I'm ok with reimagining some aspects and expanding Clark Kent's time in Smallville but some of their basic premises were bad from the start. Here goes:

1) Everything is meteor-related, give it a break. This is a cop out, it gives them an excuse for not coming up with something original or to introduce the freak of the week.

2) The Clark Kent and Lana Lang relationship was ok for the high school years but this sappy on again off again is getting old.

3) The no fly zone policy is just plain stupid (whether it's in the contract or not). They should have changed this years ago.

4) Clark Kent's idea of "staying on the farm" is also bad. I guess they need to keep him there in order to be a "Smallville" series. It can't be call "Smallville" if Clark Kent is all over the world, can it? They should have name this series something like "Superman - the formative years". Something that is less limiting and might have allowed the characters to move around. Everytime the "JL" ask Clark to join, he has to turn them down because of Smallville. The series is stuck in its own Bermuda Triangle - Smallville ==> Metropolis ==> the Fortress.

5) No costume? Another lame idea along with most of the major characters in the Superman world being introduced in the series. How would he get away with the glasses? At least, they wiped out Chloe's knowledge about Clark but what about everybody else. Are they going to pull a Dallas moment and made the whole series a dream? Smallville is not the center of the universe.

6) All about Lex and the Luthors. Just about everything in the series ultimately come back to Lex, Lionel, or both. Even now when both Lex and Lionel are gone, the Tess Mercer character (bad actress, about as good as fingernails on a chalkboard), is still carrying out Lex's evil plans (whatever they are). At least Michael Rosenbaum is smart enough to jump ship.

7) Kryptonite. Clark Kent lives in kryptonite central. Why is it that he gets nailed by kryptonite from time to time accidentally of by someone out to get him? I would think that after all these years, he would have enough sense to keep from danger. Also, what good is x-ray vision if you don't check your surroundings before barging in. If you spot lead, be cautious, there could be kryptonite. Clark Kent is all supposed to an adult now. Why does he charges into situations without thinking?

I like the actors and their performance in general (Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, Kristin Kreuk, Erica Durance, John Glover, Alison Mack, John Schneider, Annette O'toole, Justin Hartley). However, the series premise and the story lines did not provide them with enough variety and innovative ideas to play with.
Well said!

These are the reasons that I have only been an on again/off again viewer.

I know that they promised no flying and no costume, but that has been killing the show for years. They keep hitting a wall because they can't turn Clark into Superman. I think they should just throw all of their self-imposed rules out the window and get this show rolling. There have been some really good episodes for the most part, but it seems they keep getting in a rut where they are just stalling.

I missed a few episodes (while in between Cocmast/Direct-TV) and haven't watched the show since early October. I've since gotten most of the "lost" episodes re-recorded on the DVR, but I'm not all that excited to catch up.

The show will always be special to me (first show I got into on DVD). The writers have made a lot of choices I didn't like/agree with but it's still mostly a good show.

+1...exactly. I started watching at the 100th episode (hell of a one to start at imho) after prep work for Superman Returns at EA. This season is getting the series back on track, as the writers are finally starting to revolve it around Clark/Supes.

i thought bulletproof rocked, just watched it. i'm just kind of disappointed to see the whole clark/lana thing start up AGAIN (even though it likely won't continue past her episodes).

i'm just happy for a break from the "meteor freak" episodes. i liked how the writers worked in cops with the definition of justice in respect to clark and oliver. yeh i thought the story couldve been better, but i thought it worked well. i'm also really disappointed that
[Show spoiler] lex appears in the show (as a body double) yet it seems like michael rosenbaum has no desire to return so i have a hard time getting excited about a prospective lex revival
. we'll see what happens i guess.

and i too miss lois. where the flack has she been??? with chloe watching over jimmie it seems lois should have at least made an appearance in this episode, maybe helping clark out.

It wasn't that great for me. As for their relationship....I doubt it will last judging by next week's promo.

yeh..shortest preview ever btw, what like 8 seconds? i didnt actually LOVE bulletproof but im liking how most of season 8 episodes 1) EACH advance the season's main plot (there are very few "filler" episodes that previous seasons were ridden with, and 2) dont have meteor freaks as bad guys. i think the producers are finally trying to stray away from those storylines

This is imo the most solid season yet. Every episode has been good. I just home the Clark and Lana thing doesn't start again.

i dont think it will, for the reason mentioned above and because lana is only going to be in 5 episodes, plus MAJOR SPOILER
[Show spoiler] there was a rumor that there is something keeping her alive, and without it she would/will be dead

sidenote i love your sig...i remember the thread you got that from. that was a fun discussion

The writers are certainly hitting a wall trying to stall the inevitable. Get it on already! Have him become Superman for crying out loud. If that means the end of the series so be it. It's better to go out on top than to drag it to the point of ridicule. The show, even with the flaws, has been good so far but I think they are on the brink. The whole Traveler plot line was waay weak and no Rosenbaum? That could potentialy kill the series altogether.

On the positive, I thought that Lex, killing his father last season was perfect. I think its the perfect device for turning Lex Luthor into the Lex we all know and love/hate from the comics and movies.

I just hope they dont continue to drag the inevitable. For better or worse, Smallville should have one or two seasons to go.(provided they do what has to be done) As far as Smallville being a "re-imaging" of the origin of Superman it has been a total success. And as an old fan I have enjoyed it immensly to watch the new stuff and how they tie it with traditional Superman lore. I especially love how they have brought people from previous incarnations of Superman into this show. From Clark's mom being Lana in Superman III to former Supermen Dean Cain and Christopher Reeve showing up on episodes. But it's time to go.

Dude, they aren't delaying the inevitable. Thank you for your opinion, but the show should go forward. Last night was the only weak episode in my opinion. However, I like the idea of Lana wearing the Prometheus suit. That's interesting.

Where the hell... is Doomsday??

Plus, I figure
[Show spoiler] Lana and Clark vs Doomsday and Doomsday eats her face, then Clark is 'mortally wounded' she runs him up to the fortress before she kicks off and he manages to heal there

Interesting theory, but unlikely IMO.
