True, but the hdr button only cycles through dynamic range presets. You can do that yourself manually. I don't miss the original remote at all, I would have gone mad by now.

I use the HDR optimizer all the time. Especially with Netflix while watching Dolby Vision content. I am so happy with the optimizer that in the settings I blocked Dolby Vision output. With HDR I use the optimizer which result in a significantly brighter picture and at the same time details in the darker areas remain. fyi I use the Panasonic UB9004 connected to a LG oled 77c8.

Wow. That movie's mastered out to 1000 nits MDL and only 600-ish nits MaxCLL (brightest point in the whole show) so if your TV's natively nuking that then I dread to think what more intense HDR content would look like!

Being a C6, I dont doubt it.

I need to try that scene out on my Sony and see what it does.

Default 230v?

Hi,

I bought mine from Value Electronics. I wonder if it can be used in 230V as most SMPS's are universal voltage? Thanks.

After having the thrice-damned Samsung UBD K8500 (which is marginally better than an Xbox1X for 4K playback) since November 2017, i gave a consideration to getting the Sony UBP X700 and decided everything or just keep the Samsung and bought the UB820.

Oh good god, what a difference in image quality! The thing that amazes me about it is how naturalistic the image is, whether it be a filmed motion picture filled with grain (Saving Private Ryan) or a digitally filmed series like Planet Earth 2, it really is stunning! Having said that, you can't polish a turd and Dredd 2012 still looks like shit...

Playing around with my 820 today and noticed something strange: Both UHD and Blu-ray discs have 'RealCinema' on my LG TV settings greyed out and set to OFF, however my Mission Impossible: Fallout disc (Dolby Vision) is greyed out and set to ON.

I can understand a DV disc greying out that setting, but why is it happening to good ol' SDR and HDR discs? And really shouldn't RealCinema be on if anything? I'm going crazy trying to make it work! I've tried several different UHD and Blu-ray discs, resetting the settings for both TV and player but no luck. Any ideas?

Make sure you turn 24fps set to auto and not off in the settings menu of the player.

It would depend if you're using any motion-interpolation with the different picture settings, if you are (even if they're set to zero), they'll disable RealCinema mode. Black Frame Insertion might as well, but I'm not 100%.

It's definitely on Auto.

No TruMotion being used! While playing a disc, the only TruMotion option I'm shown is the BFI toggle. I'm getting the same issue through Netflix and Amazon Prime via the PS4... looks like it's a TV issue. All these settings are making my head spin

You just need to create a 1920 x 1080 wallpaper in JPEG and upload it onto the player

So would it be advisable to upgrade to an 820 from a UBK90 if the primary use would be on a projector? Or would the difference not matter as much? The projector would be an Epson 5040Ub.

Not sure what a UBK90 is but if you intend to watch UHD blurays the 820 has a useful advantage in being able to tone map HDR discs to SDR2020. For projectors with a good HDR mode even the HDR2020 mode may also be useable. I think it’s a worthwhile improvement as I added this player to my Oppo 203 which also was a good 4k player. I know a few 5040 owners that use a 820 and are quite pleased with the player. YOMV.

Update: Fixed it. The issue with RealCinema being greyed out to OFF was because the 820 player was labeled PC mode on the TV. I've now set it to 'Blu-ray Player' and RealCinema and many other picture settings are back.

Ok next question...

I hadn't noticed this with movies, but playing an episode of Star Trek: The Original Series (after initial menu loading) there's a pause in audio for a second or two while the video plays before stuttering to life, however if I press the back button it starts the title fine with audio.

Is this some kind of HDMI 'handshake' issue? The PS4 has no problem playing with the sound from the start. Is there a way to fix it on the 820?
