Better go around the Marantz then. If it’s making 23.976 into 24.000Hz then it’s adding a sort of judder to the video.

Choosing the 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 that passes through the correct framerate would also work. It’s not like anything is encoded at 4:4:4 anyway. You’re not losing anything by using 4:2:2.

I bought some UHD cables earlier this year that wouldn’t pass 4K but did fine with 1080p. They weren’t certified and the cheapest they had.

But still, if the hypothetical fitty cent cable worked…

Odd thing that marantz pass through 23.97 and 24 from Apple TV - without a hitch.

But yeah, I've decided to stick to direct connection. As for setting - changed output from 4K to automatic (since it upscales to 4k even 2k bd), and from 4:4:4 to automatic (since it still gives 4:4:4 on all discs I've tested - 2k or 4k).

It's ridiculous to spend money on a premium player you expect to last years and have it go out in such little time.
Have you checked the player's completely level? might be worth picking up one of those boards for vinyl turntables.

I have it on a spot in my tv stand. I don't see why it wouldn't be level.

My understanding is that most (maybe all) modern AVRs do some level of picture processing that does not show up in the menus, so unfortunately cannot be turned off fully.

Yeah Best Buy has it too for $949. Took advantage of the 24 month financing option (Amazon has 12 months, but you have to make equal monthly payments). I don't know how much longer this player (or high end players in general) will be available, so I bought another one as a backup or to use in another TV room later.

(Disc 3 was the one I noticed the issue with to begin with)

Edit #2: Disc 3 is now being output at 50p, hurrah! No idea what the issue was. Lol
It's doing it again, ugh.
This time, Disc 5. Started off correct at 50p, then after accidentally pressing the internet button and having to restart the disc and playing the same episode again, it's now being output at 60p. Restarting the player didn't fix it, nor did turning everything (TV, speakers etc) off at the plug and leaving it for a few minutes before trying again.
Then I tried Disc 3 (which was the one I was having issues with originally, a while back) and it's being output correctly at 50p. So then I put Disc 5 back in, and lo and behold, it's also being output correctly at 50p again.
I really don't understand what is causing this

Your logic makes zero sense. IF there are the slightest of variations in the video signal, they would be utterly indistinguishable to the human eye for a "name brand" cable at 10X or 20X the price. You are paying for the name, not the image/audio result!

Best Buy must have loved you when you bought into the format.

"Let me introduce you to the Cadillac of HDMI Cables: The 'Monster Cable Ultra Fine'. Only $130 for an 8' cable. Trust me, you don't want to live without this cable!"

That’s not correct, flimflam. If HDMI works, it works. If it’s faulty or isn’t able to handle the necessary bandwidth you’ll get no image, dropouts, very obvious visual issues, etc. There are no “subtle differences” between a $10 and a $1000 cable.

Good call on purchasing a backup and you're absolutely right that we have no idea when exactly these players will exit the market. Amazon offered me 18 months financing which is rather tempting.

All this talk of "will Panasonic stop making players" is making me wonder if I need to fill a closet with backup players. With the number of new titles still coming out on both 4k and regular blu-ray I can't imagine it will become impossible to buy new players overnight. Studios aren't going to produce titles that can only be watched on a "dead" format so I think we are safe for a while.

Right. That is exactly what I said. If it works, it works.

There are absolutely different cable types (gold plated for example) that are supposedly better with Electro magnetic interference. But like I said it simply does not matter in the makeup of the cable. What you see will be the same.

Not impossible, but I'd imagine we'll be lumbered with cheap players and ridiculously expensive ones (which is a long shot), there won't be any middle ground.

Unsubstantiated reports of “Panasonic will stop making players” is simply that. Unsubstantiated reports.

I finally got an 820 myself yesterday, which came with an interesting sticker:

Why would they retire when they dominate the market? Not like they have much competition anyway.

Exactly. They sold every player out of their factory unlike any other brands out there.

Domination of a rapidly shrinking market isn’t as big of a deal as people might think it is. I hope they don’t cease production as it’d be a hammer blow for physical media.
