I believe MGVC works as an enhancement layer.

It's like HDR10+ / Dolby Vision to 4k Blu ray.

I've had the Sony X-700 for nearly 4 years. I finally decided to upgrade to the UB820 after 4 years of not being able to make it through a BD-100 disk without freezing at the layer change.

Also any chance off taking blu ray pictures with MGVC on and off. Thanks
The Japanese models are with Japanese only language . However, most of the menus are like the other releases world wide.

I can't but here is an idea of the subtle differences.

So basically it will be waving google translate image over the menu to activate settings. Lol.

Do you enjoy your UB900/9000? How did you procure it? Amazon Japan?

It’s an extension layer for regular 1080p Blu-ray created by Pannysonic, intended to give 12-bit depth rather than the standard 8-bit.

I don't think it works at all for studio made, consumer Blu-ray because it never really became an industry-wide practice to dual layer encode 12 bit video on regular 1080p discs. They're just 8 bit.

Only on specifically encoded MGVC discs played on compatible Japanese hardware.

The settings are not too bad. There's only a few that I needed to change and fortunately for the ub9000, a reviewer on DVD Prime did a translation in Korean which Google translate nicely for all the menus.

Got my UB900 for Amazon Japan, UB9000 for Yahoo Auctions. Yes, both players are very good. The colours are different between the players. The UB900 was Japan's first 4k only player and apparently had a different design team. The colours on the UB900 seem more vivid vs the UB9000 which are more neutral/cool.

Something specific to the Japanese market like the MUSE Hi-Vision 1080i laserdiscs?

There doesn't seem to be any whitepaper available regarding MGVC (of which I can see), but this site provides quite a bit of info: https://www.phileweb.com/news/d-av/201304/10/32810.html (you will need to use Google translate if not using a compatible web browser).

It seems to make use of MPEG-4 MVC, which is used to encode 3D Blu-ray.

Can anyone please give me advice on what setting the HDR TV Type should be for a Sony KD-55XE9305 TV? I've seen different nits brightness specs from different sources, so I'm a little confused. Also, best settings for 4K (50p / 60p) Output, Colour Mode and Deep Colour Output?

MGVC is probably along the same lines as HEVC's separate video data streams being used to recreate a single FEL 12 bit Dolby Vision video stream.

Yes, it’s a base layer + difference data type system, they jury-rigged the 3D MVC encoding to deliver the bit depth extension instead.

A pain point about MGVC that there are not know ways on e.g. how to decrypt this format and e.g. play on computer, or maybe even transform to 4K HDR.

Just data files can be accessed, MakeMKV when backing up the discs stores the files in KDM folder, but there's not know software that knows how to deal with those files

Got my genuine Panasonic 9000 US 000175 remote today. Works perfectly as intended. :-)

With the HDR button.

My Panasonic 820 arrives today. My workday hasn't even begun and I'm already wishing it was over to play with it ASAP.

I would have thought Super High Luminance, but you can experiment if the lower setting.

I'd use Auto for most things, you can't go too far wrong.
