I may well take you up on that if you’re close by as our next big family reunion is planning for Binghamton, an area around which I still have ties - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ws#post2629115

And with regards to my “ties”, for background, I’ll humbly add that despite how much money I could rake in by simply signing a few papers, to show you how environmentally conscious I am, unlike some other landowners (see the map in the following hyperlink), after being approached, I still refuse to lease the land for fracking to Talisman Energy, or anyone else for that matter - https://www.facebook.com/ProtectMaho...8030113910594/

Short version, a little background on the Peter Barten model, see 2nd heading “Human Vision and the DICOM GSDF” - https://siim.org/page/displays_chapter3
Long version, p. 17 (published in 2011) - http://dicom.nema.org/Dicom/2011/11_14PU.PDF
In contradistinction to Dolby and PQ (Dolby having donated the PQ curve to SMPTE), HLG proponents didn’t use Barten’s research as to what humans can see with regards to banding in color. In fact, they kind of marginalized the use of that curve in favor of another scientist’s research from 1992 in order to argue for their particular HDR approach (HLG using 10 bits) and stay below human’s visual threshold for detecting the presence of banding in video content.

So, for those unlike me who now have to catch up on a boat load of soccer matches today(see last page) before watching a critical World Series game tonight, as opposed to the Barten curve, does anyone know what model/curve HLG proponents used to make their case when introducing their solution?

Welp, at least from my POV, the only good thing about watching last night’s game was seeing Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon sitting/standing next to each other with those T-shirts….
https://ew.com/news/2018/10/29/jimmy...series-shirts/

Tip of the hat to the Boston Red Sox though, as they are a very good team.

It be ‘Schreiber’ (William F.) - on p. 2 (after the butterfly pics) of a white paper by the BBC (linked to somewhere on this forum back in Sept. or Oct. of 2015)…. https://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rd/pubs/...les/WHP309.pdf

And realize that they (the Barten and Schreiber models) are significantly different from one another as to what they assert regarding the capability of the human visual system and thusly the generated curves – see BT. 2246…. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...46#post9125661

A little dated, but still a good tutorial on multiple aspects of HDR and color are slides from a previous conference presentation by Erik et al. -
http://www.eusipco2016.org/documents...R_tutorial.pdf

(also dovetailing into the preceding post, as it includes a little illustration on contrast sensitivity function-based models like that of Barten)

Finally for this afternoon, as my lunch break is over, I’d like to express my heartfelt feelings to the people of Pittsburgh (as well as all those who have experienced hate in one form or another).....and on an entirely different tragic sporting note to the people of Leicester for their respective losses.

Stay strong.

oh noes , the local paparazzi finally found the bar - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...k#post15650436 with amenities.

And is posting about it as “BREAKING NEWS” on social media this evening –

Guess I shouldn’t have made this illustrative comment 3 weeks ago to Waboman as maybe it revealed too much to the lurkers… https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...d#post15608810

Oh well. They can't get on base anyway.

And here, on this thread, where we sometimes transition from the benefits of HDR/WCG in order to enlighten HDR folks as to the benefits of the next, next gen feature, namely HFR, definitely with use for watching sports….

Peter Jackson had the courage and insight to experiment (as well as for that matter, Ang too) with something new

and personally I think should have been afforded more respect for being a pioneer, especially by those critics quick to condemn when the closest they’ll ever get to making a film is posting a home video on YouTube.

not that he’d ever try to intentionally evade them; however, he could do so if ever required, e.g. -
