At a bare minimum, you must do a the primary HDR grade and the SDR trim pass. Then, by default, everything is interpolated between the two. Then you can do more intermediate trim passes at 600, 1000 and 2000. And then the interpolation is done between those points.

I am told at least one studio uses the SDR trim pass for their SD releases. Those will be better once 4.0 is in full swing. There are other improvements too, such as much better tone mapping in general.

All of this is only as good as the effort put into adjusting the trim pass controls. I know some have done less than others. It all comes down to time / money.

To me, personally, the greatest benefits of Dolby Vision are its 12 bit enhancement layer and potential for ICtCp encoding on UHD Blu-ray... now the studios have start utilizing these features.



Again, I am truly disappointed that the BDA didn't require a 12 bit spec with ICtCp rather than 10 bits and standard sampling protocols for these discs, so the studios didn't have to rely on an OPTIONAL Dolby Vision format to get us there. Dolby is correct in their assertion that with HDR grading, you really do need more than 10 bits per pixel to truly lessen the visual artifacts that can become exacerbated, such as banding. The key word "optional" in Hollywood means we're not going to use it.

But isn't it the case that the only way to get 12bits, is to use a "Full Enhancement Layer", which is now being strongly discouraged*? Now that we have the "Low Latency-only" dolby vision capable devices?

That does require an Apollo level program (that should have started decades ago) to help come up with alternative, mostly neutral energy solutions without interference from the fossil fuel industry and FAST (besides the all too easy answers of recycling, conserving, turning off your lights, and stop having so many damn babies), which sadly doesn't seem to be happening.

After producing the HDR master and the required SDR version, an optional HDR intermediate grade (ex. at 1000 nits) takes at the most, 2 hrs. of trim time, often less.

I know, but I'm just saying: Stacey referenced the newer controls being a boon for SDR specifically and did so again above, i.e. from reading between the lines it appears that it's not those intermediate HDR downconversions that are really 'suffering' creatively as a result of the current trim controls. He certainly doesn't seem to be saying that all the intermediate passes he's done for the UHD S&M disc are borked but hey, he's got a disc to sell so he wouldn't say that.

As we know, Alfonso Cuaron delivered two separate HDR and SDR passes to Netflix for Roma - the first time this has ever happened with an HDR deliverable for them according to the AC article - because he wasn't impressed with the results from the downconverted SDR, and I'm glad that more controls will be in place for those who need them. But the implementation of DV itself is so variable anyway in certain displays and playback devices that I'm not sure all that extra v4.0 finesse even matters when it comes to HDR...

As for le disc I find a measure of irony in there being a 'press preview' platter because most tech bloggers/sites don't have a damned clue about HDR, despite their constant jibber-jabber about it.
