I'm curious what people mean by cheap? When I think cheap or cheap-looking, I think of stuff like the first season of Star Wars Rebels (the only season I've seen in full). Just bland character models and simple environments/lighting/etc. This is a mixed bag on the former and none of the latter.

Budget is a nothing argument when it comes to animation. Look at the stuff Cartoon Saloon releases on a sub $9 million budget.

I'm thinking it's just the cell-shading. People always complain cell-shaded art looks crappy and cheap, even when it's supposed to reflect the look of a comic.

Just out of curiosity, what animated films have you seen theatrically?

Cell shading isn't as bad as everyone makes out either. Take the new Spider-Man PS4 game for example.

The cell shaded costume looks awesome.

I tend to agree.

That suit made me laugh when I unlocked it. Brought back memories of playing Ultimate Spider-Man.

Do you want a full list? Well in the past two years: Kung Fu Panda 3, Finding Dory, The Secret Life of Pets, Moana, Incredibles 2. All of which are gorgeous movies, except for The Secret Life of Pets.

I never realized Spider-Ham had such a weird ass f*** origin. I always assumed it was pig getting bit by a spider, but no. It's the other way around, LOL! xD

Wow so you really do just limit yourself to the main studio gigs?

Guess stuff like Waltz for Bashir, It’s Such A Beautiful Day and Your Name aren’t worth your time?

I’m not into anime. Those types of movies have a specific audience, one that does not pertain to me. My extent of watching anime is Pokémon.

What about them? I know they’re not anime, do I need a reason for not seeing those theatrically despite their limited theatrical releases?

My point is you've really limited yourself by not seeing really interesting films that use the medium differently just because they're not 'expensive' enough. There's an utter wealth of great, mature, creative storytelling that you've shut yourself off from. I think all the best films I'v seen this year have budgets that don't even break 10 mill, if that, yet everyone on this forum will be checking out dreck like Venom simply because it's big and expensive, it certainly ain't right.

I don’t limit myself to big studio fare. I limit myself to movies that actually look decent.

People can see what they want to see, but yeah, that film was a whole bunch of meh. Don't hate it, nor like it, right down the middle.

I LOVE the new trailer for this movie. Unique, gorgeous animation with fun characters. S
[Show spoiler]eeing a preview of the movie during Venom's credits was surprising and exceptional. By far the best thing about Venom.

The best thing you can do for yourself as a fan of film is to venture off the beaten path and keep an open mind.

Everybody has their taste, but boiling a movie down to its studio or polished look is a massive mistake. Just going off Foggy's recommendations: Don Hertzfeldt's stuff is pretty easy to get ahold of and is deceptively deep and hilarious (a perfect counterpoint to not liking the look of the animation). Your Name was one of the best movies of its year, period, and transcends the form. My wife who refuses to watch anything anime absolutely loved it.

I would also recommend Tower, The Breadwinner, and Kubo and the Two Strings if we're limiting things to the last couple of years. And - if you want another excellent Sony Pictures Animation release - Arthur Christmas.

So I don't know what your criteria for "decent" is, but try expanding that a bit.

This looks like something I'd love, but I can't get through the trailer without wanting to throw-up. I watched it with the someone else and they felt the same way, we don't suffer from motion-sickness, this left us craving for Dramamine.

Thanks for telling me what I should watch and for assuming that I don’t watch relatively obscure films. As if watching those makes you an expert on movies anyway.

They aren't assumptions as much as open admissions on your part but thanks for being understanding and keeping an open mind as always. And who said anything about experts?
