That's a nice logo but I hope they drop 'animated' from the title. Do we really need to be told it's animated?

my guess is that's just for the purposes of this presentation, which also had the logo for the live-action spiderman

I hope so. I'd rather it was named after one of the comicbook series like 'The Spectacular Spider-Man'.

Since it's a Lord/Miller brainchild I really wouldn't be surprised if the final title ends up being "The Animated Spider-Man."

Animated Spider-Man Movie Rumored to Feature Miles Morales

Quote:
Of the many delights of Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was arguably the peak. The inclusion of the legendary web-slinger within the Marvel Cinematic Universe represented a bit of a coup for Marvel, having worked out a deal with Sony to share the rights to the character so that the fan favorite could finally interact with Iron Man, Captain America, and the rest of the Avengers team. Prior to Holland’s official casting announcement, however, the rumor mill swirled and churned over the prospect that the MCU’s Spider-Man might not, in fact, be the Peter Parker version of the character.

The idea made sense, of course. Peter Parker’s story had been explored to death in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, and again in the two Amazing Spider-Man movies starring Andrew Garfield (The Social Network). There was certainly room for the inclusion of Miles Morales, the half black, half Puerto Rican teenager who took over the mantel of Spider-Man in the Marvel Comics Universe following the death of Peter Parker in 2011. With the calls for an increase of diversity in comic book movies, it seemed like the time was right for a new version of Spider-Man for fans to fall in love with. But no; once again, we got another Peter Parker. As great as Holland was as Spider-Man, and probably will be in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, it certainly felt like a missed opportunity, leaving many to wonder if we’d ever see Miles Morales in a movie of his own. According to a new rumor, we just might.

Heroic Hollywood‘s Umberto “El Mayimbe” Gonzalez is reporting that Miles Morales will be the Spider-Man featured in the upcoming animated film that is set to reach theaters in 2018. El Mayimbe (whose news scoop track record is admittedly hit/miss) further notes that a quote from Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman (see below) from last year’s CinemaCon had already suggested that the animated movie might focus on a web-slinger other than Peter Parker.

“The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing.”

It does make sense for Sony to want to differentiate its animated Spider-Man from the MCU version of the character, and Miles Morales would certainly be the best way to go about doing this. After all, the general reaction prior to the Holland announcement seemed to indicate that Miles would’ve been an acceptable Spider-Man to appear in Civil War, and the calls for greater diversity in characters/casting in the superhero film genre in general are still ringing loudly from many corners of the superhero-loving fan community.

The animated Spider-Man movie is being co-written and produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie), but it doesn’t have an official director, synopsis, nor even a title just yet (beyond “Animated Spider-Man“). This makes it tricky to speculate what we might be in store for when the film sees the light of day. Miles Morales does offer a good opportunity for Sony to give fans a different version of Spider-Man on the big screen – one whose story hasn’t been examined in movie form three times before.

It’s also possible that Sony would rather ride Marvel’s wave and present an alternative version of Peter Parker; its guess work and speculation at this point, anyway. Still, Miles Morales is as good a guess as any, and it’s about time for the character to make his movie debut, even just animated form. The character made his debut in Ultimate Spider-Man, which exists outside of the main Marvel Comics continuity, to great critical and fan acclaim – quickly earning him a readership, despite Miles not being Peter Parker. The fanbase alone is more than enough reason to give Miles the chance to shine, and it would be the best way to differentiate the animated Spider-Man movie.

The Animated Spider-Man Movie (official titled TBA) will open in U.S. theaters on December 21st, 2018.

Man, it's kinda weird that we're going to see two Spider-Men happening at the same time. Wonder if all of these Spidey reboots wil turn of the general audience?

We're in for a Spider-Man movie this year, next year, and the year after that. I can definitely see franchise fatigue settling in. Just the fact that this is the fourth big-screen incarnation of Spider-Man will also turn a lot of audiences away from seeing it (maybe uninformed movie-goers will think that it's yet another reboot instead of a new off-shoot). Though I dunno, maybe the Spidey brand is strong enough to support both of them.

Except this is an animated spin-off movie featuring a different Spider-Man that the general audience hasn't even heard of.

Isn't that an issue itself? Audiences may get really involved in the Tom Holland Spider-Man, so if it isn't Peter and it isn't live-action they may not be interested. Then again, it could reinvigorate the franchise. It can go both ways. I could be proven wrong, but there's a few things to worry about with this movie in terms of its box office potential.

I don't believe in superhero fatigue. It's just that the Spider-Man franchise feels like a video game now. Investing so many hours into playing the video game, but then you mistakenly erase your data and now you don't feel like playing it again anytime soon. Because you know you would have to start all over from the very beginning. That's what Spider-Man feels like to me right now. I'm still looking forward to Spider-Man movies, though.

Oh, that's exactly what I was trying to get across as franchise fatigue. Its people getting tired of a brand-new Spider-Man series starting up every few years. I didn't mean superhero fatigue in general, that clearly hasn't settled in yet and may never happen. Just want to clarify.

I mean, I am getting tired of superhero movies right now. But that's ONLY because DC isn't doing so good right now, and Marvel just uses the same formula they always use in almost all of their movies. Despite all that talk about them giving each movie in the MCU their own genre. Say what you will about Fox, but I think they are the only ones that really give each superhero movie their own style. X-Men: First Class feels like a 60s James Bond film, X-Men: Days of Future Past feels like a good Terminator movie, Deadpool is a "parody" that pokes fun at the superhero genre, and Logan looks like a western drama. Now I'm not playing favorites here, I also have my fair share of problems with Fox as well. My point is, I can still get excited for superhero movies. I'm just not going to run out to see all of them at the theater is all.

Fox is definitely trying to turn things around by being more experimental and creative with their movies. If their track record remains consistently strong, they can definitely pull ahead of their competition. I had superhero fatigue in 2013/2014, but recently superhero movies have been getting more and more inventive, so I've gotten back on board.

Animated Spider-Man Film Finds Its Miles Morales (Exclusive)
APRIL 13, 2017 10:47am PT by Borys Kit

Shameik Moore will portray the hero, while Liev Schreiber will voice the villain in the Sony Pictures Animation project.

Spider-Man has found his voice.

Shameik Moore, one of the breakout stars of indie Dope and Netflix's hip-hop drama The Get Down, will voice the Marvel superhero in Sony Pictures Animation's untitled Spider-Man feature project.

The project does not spotlight Peter Parker as the web-swinging wonder but Miles Morales, the popular incarnation introduced in 2011 who is half black, half Latino.

At the same time, Ray Donovan topliner Liev Schreiber is joining the project as the voice of the movie's villain. The character's identity is being kept locked tight.

Phil Lord wrote the project and is producing alongside his Lego Movie and Han Solo movie co-director, Chris Miller.

The Little Prince writer Bob Persichetti is set to co-direct alongside Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians).

Plot details are a secret, but the focus is on Morales as he juggles school life and superheroics in the classic Spider-Man mold.

Morales was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli and was introduced in 2011 as part of the Ultimate Marvel imprint, which told tales set in an alternate story universe.

Marvel ended the Ultimate imprint in 2015, but Morales by then had made such an impression that he was integrated into the mainstream Marvel line.

The character appeared in Disney XD's animated series Ultimate Spider-Man, where he was voiced by Donald Glover.

Moore, who has wrapped the James Franco-directed drama The Pretenders, is repped by ICM Partners and manager Brian Young at Three Six Zero.

Schreiber, a multiple Emmy nominee for his work on Ray Donovan, voices a character in Liongate's My Little Pony: The Movie. He is repped by UTA and Untitled.

WTF!? Why didn't they cast Donald Glover? I mean, if they actually gotten a kid around the same age as Miles then sure. But no. The guy they picked looks to be around the same age as Glover.

I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere online, but my friend who attended CinemaCon in March says that Sony's Tom Rothman said at that event that this film was being moved to 2019. Yet when listing off comic superhero films for 2018 the media still lists this one as 12/21/18.

In any case, if it has indeed moved to 2019, that would make the Aquaman and Venom release date dance make more sense. These studios talk to each other at times in order to not cannibalize their similar properties.
