Saw this and thought it was really good, but a bit disappointing. Everyone was saying this thing could win best picture, but I don't see it. I thought the screenplay was fantastic, and the story was powerful, but that's what carries it the most for me. Thomas McCarthy's directing is raw, but the film isn't very visually appealing. I expected a bit more from the acting. Michael Keaton was really good, but nothing I haven't seen from him before, Tucci was fine, McAdams was fine, but Mark Ruffalo's performance was very odd. I don't know if it was the accent, but the voice he was doing was very distracting and his performance was really over the top, especially compared to the subtle acting in the rest of the film. However, who really impressed me, is Liev Schreiber, who is incredible. He should walk away with the oscar nomination. His performance is so subtle and naturalistic, his performance is perfect. Either way, I found the story to be very engaging, so I'd give it a solid 8/10. But I don't find it to be anything worth revisiting.

Spotlight is a solid and straightforward, if rather unspectacular film dramatizing a seminal Boston Globe investigation of sexual deviancy and institutional secrecy in the Catholic Church. The film, a type of jubilant ode to old-fashioned print journalism, is most comfortable with procedure, finding a certain energy and magic in scenes of inquiring telephone calls and searching through untidy cases of archived legal documents. The experience would be far more resonant, however, if there were more scenes featuring the priests' victims (the few present are fascinating and poignant) and a stronger sense of Boston's cultural identity and how it was impacted by the 2002 revelation of malfeasance on the part of the archdiocese. There is a superficiality to the film's handling of the complicated and painful subject of child molestation, as if the characters' Idealized Journalism is unfolding in a vacuum rather than in a real city and community contending with real demons. Also, while every member of the A-list ensemble (including Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, and Rachel McAdams) delivers a fine performance in line with their pro status, they are given neither the screen time nor the depth on the page required to truly distinguish themselves.

In my experience, the music can have a big impact on my emotional connection, or lack there of, to a film like this. |
