They just mailed it in on that last run for a td, defense didn't even bother to try and tackle. I doubt Gruden can get rid of everyone, because it clearly looks like he has lost that team. I'm starting to wonder if he makes the season without being fired.

Nobody knows the full details of his contract, but I've read that there's a belief only the first 5 years of the contract are guaranteed and then the last 5 years are a team option and it's somewhat backloaded. Still no way he gets fired after a year though. I would guess worst case scenario he lasts 3 years.

Gruden's contract is backloaded, but I think you need to give the guy some time. With all those picks, let's see how that goes.

I'm sure part of the reason Gruden's contract is backloaded is because of the difference in state taxes. In California Gruden's paying 13.3% state tax but in Nevada he'll pay 0%, so Gruden should be pushing as much money into the future as possible. Any Raiders players that sign extensions this offseason should defer any guaranteed signing bonuses or big base salaries into 2020 as well.

It's a different situation with players, right? Deferring guaranteed money to 2020 doesn't necessarily mean they'll still be Raiders at that time, and could make trading those contracts to other organizations more difficult since the new team would be responsible for the guaranteed money.

Like all pro head coaches, Gruden wants his team. Not some team built by someone else. Not only is he going to get his team, but he’s got 4 first round picks and upwards of 70mil cap space. Raiders are building for a stretch run as early as next season. I’m curious to see what he does with Carr. I’m not sure he’s the answer at QB...and that contract!
2018 will be a tough year, but if I’m a Raiders fan I’m looking forward to 2019.

Yeah, in a salary cap league like the NFL deferring money can be more difficult. It would have to be a case where it's a virtual guarantee the player would be on the team for 2 years. You would also have to convince the player to defer the money, because players usually want the cash as quickly as possible even when it'd be in their best interest to wait.

Hue definitely playing the revisionist history game. Now he's saying:

“We passed on three franchise QBs the first two years in Wentz, Watson and Mahomes. We played with a QB room with zero wins in the league. We played with street free agents and practice squad players in WRs. Yet our offense was the same or better than what we were doing this year. There is no way that should happen.

“You can’t pass on quarterbacks. You never pass on a potential franchise quarterback because you don’t know who’s going to be there in the future.”

In 2016:

“Oh my gosh, yes. Did I like Carson Wentz? Hell yes. He did something that no other quarterback did. I give them three minutes to memorize the book and put on the (white) board. He put it all on the board in two minutes and 48 seconds. I’ve never had a guy do that ever in my coaching career.

“But the plan was never to take a quarterback that year. It was all about trading back to get picks. If you’re doing that you’ve got to pick the right players.”

I talked to Hue Jackson about Wentz many, many times pre-draft. Jackson never disparaged his ability. Thought 2 was too high to take him.

From 2017:

With that top pick, the Browns took Myles Garrett, an outstanding edge rusher out of Texas A&M. Garrett was the guy Jackson wanted at No. 1, according to NFL.com’s Mike Silver, who wrote a tell-all piece about the Brown’s draft class in May 2017. Jackson did not want quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who Brown wanted. And Jackson did not want Mahomes or Watson at that top spot.

Trubisky went No. 2 overall, Mahomes went with the 10th overall selection and the Texans took Watson at 12th. The Browns were the owners of the No. 12 pick in the draft, but — like they did with Wentz the previous year — traded that pick to a quarterback-needy team. And Jackson was not banging the table for Watson. The Browns coach wanted safety Malik Hooker at No. 12, according to NFL.com.

All of this lends itself to an obvious question: How can you possibly expect to build a culture of accountability with a head coach who doesn't have any?

But then again, the owner who hired him basically let his underlings take the fall for him in the Pilot/Flying J scam, so perhaps he recognized Hue as a bird from the same feather.

Carr is a decent piece but even in a down AFC, he's not the answer.
