I can't believe Kiper gave the Chiefs an overall grade of C+. What a joke.

Hopefully the lockout ends soon so the players can work out in anticipation of the new season.

Grading drafts right away is pointless. Dan Patrick read some past grades this morning on his radio show. He read a report from 2006 that gave the Saints an A for drafting Reggie Bush and the Texans an F for passing on Bush. After 5 seasons it's hard to argue that Mario Williams hasn't been much better than Bush, who will be cut before the season unless he's willing to take a huge pay cut. Patrick also read a 2007 report giving the Raiders an A for drafting JaMarcus Russell, who is one of the biggest busts in NFL history. I don't even bother reading draft grades because it's impossible to know how a draft will turn out.

Several of you have pointed out to us some potentially controversial messages appearing today on the Twitter account of Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall.

Though it’s not a verified account, it’s being followed by other Steelers, including safety Troy Polamalu, center Maurkice Pouncey. Also, Mendenhall’s account attracted attention in March, when he supported Vikings running back Adrian Peterson’s comparison of pro football to slavery.

This time around, Mendenhall is offering opinions regarding the death of Osama bin Laden, and questioning whether the planes that hit the World Trade Center caused the collapse of the twin towers.

“We’ll never know what really happened,” Mendenhall said. “I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style.”

Mendenhall also expresses sympathy for bin Laden. “What kind of person celebrates death?” Mendenhall says. “It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side.”

But what would the other side have been? Bin Laden admits to masterminding and funding the plot; he has bragged about it. He’s not entitled to the presumption of innocence after admitting guilt.

We fully believe in free speech. Mendenhall has the right to say whatever he wants. But others also have the right to react to what he says. And given that he plays for a team headquartered near the location of the crash of United 93 and that the Steelers will be playing on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 in Baltimore, not all that far from where another plane crashed into the Pentagon, we’ve got a feeling that more than a few folks will be exercising their free speech rights when Mendenhall comes out onto the field.

UPDATE: Actually, it is a verified account. Well, there goes any chance he had of coming up with an excuse. Unless he plans to claim someone hacked into his account.

I forgot it was Schwartz who was with the Haynes when he was good Fairley should be a beast

So I guess Mendenhall has a degree in structural engineering, right? I'm pretty sure I saw actual jetliners hit buildings on TV that day. It's not that was a poorly documented event...

Never heard him speak?!?!? The guy literally released hundreds of tapes of his rants over the past two decades. Everyone on the planet has heard that guy speak.

This might be the single worst use of Twitter ever.

The owner happens to be a personal friend of Obama. Guess he'll be looking for a new team once teams have the power to make roster moves again.

Ya, he is. Though it should be noted the Rooney's are well known to be a Republican family. One of the Rooney family members is actually a Republican Congressman from south Florida. Their support of Obama was more of an exception from who they usually support. One of the Rooney's is actually the U.S. Ambassador to Ireland at the moment.

In any case the Rooney's don't put up with this kind of nonsense. Mendenhall really dug himself in a big hole here.

Regardless of the owner's friendship with Obama I'd be shocked if the Steelers dumped Mendenhall. He is way too valuable to the team and they have no depth behind him. Mendenhall is also young and incredibly cheap, making less than $1.3 million combined over the next 2 years. I fully expect Mendenhall to stay in Pittsburgh for at least another season.

If the Steelers got rid of player's just for saying stupid things, they would have gotten rid of James Harrison last year.

Personally I think Mendenhall is full of it but his conspiracy theories are far more widespread than many might think. Numerous polls have shown that between 1/3rd and half of New Yorkers believe the government was somehow involved. Pretty scary, huh?

He might have weird personal beliefs, but there is no denying how good he is at playing football. The Steelers need him.

Mendenhall is only digging himself in a bigger hole with these comments. He actually referred to the killing of Bin Laden as a "murder." I'm sure our special forces who carried out that raid to perfection are thrilled at being called murderers. The guy had the opportunity to surrender and refused. That's not murder, it's self defense by the soldiers.

Rashard Mendenhall clarifies tweets

Rashard Mendenhall on Wednesday posted a blog entry apologizing for and trying to clarify his controversial tweets regarding Osama bin Laden's death.

The Pittsburgh Steelers running back created a stir with comments made on his official Twitter page Monday after news of bin Laden's death broke.

He tried to clarify those comments Wednesday.

"This controversial statement was something I said in response to the amount of joy I saw in the event of a murder. I don't believe that this is an issue of politics or American pride; but one of religion, morality, and human ethics," he wrote.

Sadly I am. Not to get too much into politics but polls do show a lot of people both in NY and nationwide buy into 9/11 conspiracies. Here's just one of many polls. Wikipedia cites many. In nearly every poll the % of people who believe in a government conspiracy is greater than1/3rd.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9/11_op...#United_States

Quote:
The second major Zogby poll on 9/11 was conducted in May 2006. It was a telephone interview of 1,200 randomly-selected adults from across the United States, consisting of 81 questions, with a 2.9 percent margin of error.[5] Some of the questions asked include the following:

"Some people believe that the US government and its 9/11 Commission concealed or refused to investigate critical evidence that contradicts their official explanation of the September 11th attacks, saying there has been a cover-up. Others say that the 9/11 Commission was a bi-partisan group of honest and well-respected people and that there is no reason they would want to cover-up anything. Who are you more likely to agree with?"

Responses: 48% No Cover-up / 42% Cover-up / 10% Not sure
