Of the 16 "stat numbers" NFL lists for Qb's Eli is #1, in one of them (Passes over 40 yards). He's had a good year, but lets not kid ourselves with how much help he's getting.

Eli Manning has done well in New York. He could be thoroughly average, and people would still call him "Elite" as a result.

He's not thoroughly average, he's very good, but he's definitely viewed as a better player than he is.

Football "greatness" is thoroughly tied to perception...

If people like you as a QB, you get credit for everything your team does well(turnovers by the defense are because of your leadership), and no blame when things go wrong(That interception was totally not the QB's fault).

The flipside is also true. The Flacco's of the world get zero credit when they do well, and all the blame when the team loses.

This is very true, but its not like Eli is working with one good offensive lineman in Ryan Clady, and one above average wide out in Decker. With the way they've bowed down to Eli over the past few weeks on tv, you'd think he was piggy backing the entire team.

On a side note can't believe Painter only got sacked 16 times!

Am I the only one getting sick of the catch phrase "You can't spell Elite without Eli"?

All that pops in to my head when I hear that is "But you sure can spell Eli without Elite..."

*EDIT* Actually, it goes beyond that. Sports-casters have been doing things like referring to this as "the most anticipated superbowl in history". I get it that they LOVE it when New York plays Boston, but does the rest of the country care to the level they think they do?

I've never heard anyone call Eli "elite", and it would have to be a joke if they did.

I think they're just saying that because it's a reprise of the real "most anticipated Super Bowl in history," when the 19-0 season was on the line.

Regardless of whether or not Brady gets a fourth ring, that mother****er will never have that perfect season.

The run game and defense was pretty poor for most of the season so lets not undervalue Eli at the same time.

They have better backs then what took place this year, they were around the bottom in rushing attempts, but the yards per game were awful.

I'll undervalue him (in-terms of being elite) till he gets a completion percentage deserving of "elite qb" status. The WR corps he has he should bottom out around 62.3 not be having a career year with that percentage.

NYG defense ranked 27th in the regular season, which is probably why they went 9-7. It stepped up big time in the playoffs, yet Manning gets all the credit.

I watched long enough to see 3 or 4 Georgia starters on the AFC team (no Matt Stafford on NFC...still such a joke) and AJ Green score a TD, then I turned it off. Tuned in later to see Marshall get the MVP -- sort of happy for the guy!

Defense stepped up because it got healthier, they were very banged up at the start of the season. Manning gets all the credit because he's the QB but really the credit should go to the defense, yes. Still cannot believe people watch what is basically a flag football game in the Pro Bowl.

Eagles retained Juan Castillo as defensive coordinator, and hired former Dolphins interim coach Todd Bowles as DBs coach.
The Eagles let their embattled first-year coordinator twist in the wind for nearly a month, but have given him another chance after striking out on all potential upgrades. Bowles' hiring is excellent news for a high-priced Eagles' secondary that was often mishandled by Castillo in 2011. If the Eagles' defense gets off to a sluggish 2012 start, it's possible Castillo could be replaced by Bowles, who interviewed for a number of head coaching positions this winter.

I do!

Me and OVN will enjoy the preseason rankings having UGA so high, then drink together in solidarity when they plummet despite the easiest schedule in SEC history.

Victor Cruz is why Eli has been "elite". The guy had a 1500 yard season and he was barely on the field until week 3.

Eli throws it 20 and Cruz goes 60

Care to explain the other 3400 yards passing?

As a whole, Eli's career has been inconsistent. However this year he's playing at an elite level. Eli might go back to the old inconsistent Eli next year but right now, he is in the upper tier of quarterbacks for this season.
